    4 Stroke Piston Rings.

    Hi again,

I am having a bit of difficuilty regarding 4 stroke piston rings. I have rebuilt many 2 strokes, and I know that 2 stroke pistons have little "bumps" in them that the ring gap goes into, however on my Atc 200 motor, there are no little "bumps" on the piston.

So my question is, how exactly do I get these rings lined up correctly...

This is my first time fixing up a 4 stroke, and I would like to do it properly the first time..

    Cheers.

you have to index the ring end gaps.another words you dont want any gaps to line up.if so, you will have blow by. set the first oil ring end gap at say the 6 o clock posistion.the second oil ring set a 12 oclock. the first compression ring at 3 o clock.so on so forth. you just want to keep the end gaps at the long side of the piston skirts.instaed of the sides of the pistons.in other words, dont set any ring gaps were the wristpins are.a service manual will have detailed pics of this method
Here is where my long useless list of stuff nobody cares about should go...

I put the oil ring gaps at 3 and 9 o-clock ( put the oil ring spanner gap at 12 o-clock ). The next ring at 6 o-clock and the top one at 12 o-clock. This method works for me.

Awesome. Thanks for the help guys, I got the top end all back together.

Should my piston make a smooth sliding noise when going back and forth?

    Cheers.
