I prefer O-ring or X-ring because they generally last longer.

An O-ring is like a round piece of rubber shaped into a circle, and an X-ring is an X shaped piece of rubber shaped into a circle. X rings supposidly seal better I think?

I prefer the free chain that I get from work, I dont care if it lasts a week or a year, its free to replace. If I was buying I would definetly go with the O-ring though. The rings keep dirt and grit from getting inside the link where it pivots, making it last longer and stay lubed longer. You do have to maintain the O-ring chain with the right lube, but you should do that with any chain.

I don't even use chain lube on my x-ring D.I.D. chain. Just WD40.

x-ring is the same as o-ring except you get a "double seal" effect from the "X" shape cross section. For my little riders that don't get too much use (70's - 90 - 110's) a $25 non o-ring chain is fine. They have enclosed chain guards and I keep them out of the mud. For something with power, like my 350X o-ring is a must. Can't really keep mud off of it's chain. I recently put a non o-ring chain on my 350X and it needs replaced already - maybe 20 hours on it - and it is completely shot!!!. They seem to streach more or something - Sure you'll pay 3 or 4X more for an o or x-ring chain, but you'll replace it 3 or 4X less. The rubber ring keeps tiny mud / dirt particles out the chains joints, and gerneally that is what ruins chains!

I bought the cheapest oring chain from rockymountain and have been running it on my CR500 with no issues. It also has openings in the sides of the links to let crud pass through. Might be the ticket for you mud riders.

X-ring chains spin a little easier than standard o-ring chains and are usually slightly more expensive. I just like the fact that I don't have to adjust it after every ride. D.I.D. makes a good x-ring. They probably last about the same as a standard o-ring chain, but it's less HP loss because of less friction. It just depends on what you want to spend.

I would have to say RK is one of the best. They are quite expensive though.
