I own a lot of 500's, and have ridin alot of 500's. There are only 2 bikes that have EVER scared the crap out of me. One is my 84, and the other is my uncle's 87. That bike (with TLC, and fine tuning) is a difinate runner.

I personally would restore the complete bike, but thats my opinion. Good luck! Keep us posted.

The later model cases can work from what I read I believe, the difference is they had a clutch basket made for one more additional disc, so the clutch area is wider. I think everything else matches up. You might also try www.cr500riders.com in addition to Larry's 500 page.
there is a difference in the cases. the 85-89 cases will have to bored out to accept the 90 and up cylinder but an 85- 89 cylinder will fit on 90 and up cases. the 90 and up cylinder sleeves are big at the bottom and will not fit on the 85-89 cases... but if anyone looking to buy a complete cr 500 motor i've got one for sale...

They're big, heavy, a radial, and worthless to anyone without a hillclimber.......And I wish I knew where to get one new. last I checked they've been discontinued for years.........

The '85 was the nastiest year of all. Also the 1st year for L/C. The '85 500 is the bike that Rick Johnson refused to race unless Factory Honda de-tuned because it was so violent. I've got an '85 500 sitting on the stand in my basement. The mofo just plain hauls ass. I've owned her for almost 15 years. She's in need of a complete new ignition at this point. Ndog...if you want to part yours out...let me know.
