    drum brake

i know i ask alot of simple questions but im kind of new to trikes.well when my friend gave me his 250sx the rear wheels were already locked.i dont know how to unlock them. i tryed taking off the drum brake cover but i couldnt get it off all the way,i tryed to pry it of with 2 screwdrivers,is this the right way to take off the brake cover. is there some other reason why the breaks are locked, someone suggested if the pwer turned on it would unlock.is this true

Did you take out the two screws that are on the outside of the drum? They hold the drum to the hub. I guess It wouldn't hurt to disconnect the two brake cables off the backing plate as well. Oh, make sure your in neutral as well... never want to overlook the simple things you know.

I took my SX drum off a few days ago. I was prying and prying as well. Then I figured I might as well take those screws out... came right off!

are you talking about the screws on the side that the cables are on or the side that the rim is on?

The screws on the outside of the drum. (on eitherside of the center hole) Let me see if I can find a pic....

They would screw into the drum then the two holes on the hub (this is the best pic I have at the moment)

    Hmm...

This is what mine looks like on the 85 250sx. I've never seen your setup before.

By the looks of your pics I think you must take off the castle nut on the end of the axle and slide the hub off first.

Got any pics of the rest of the trike?

Well.. I learn something new everyday...

I can't really help you out on the proper size socket for that nut. I used a 1 1/8 inch standard socket and alot of heat. I didn't have the correct mm socket to fit.

I'm sure someone around here can be more help than me....

18mm castle nut. Take a rubber or plastic and beat the outside of the drum and then pry. Helps to break things loose. I didnt realize the difference betyween '85 and '86 either.

regular socket. Might even try adjustables if you can't get the socket to work for some unknown reason

i just tryed putting a 21mm socket on the castle bolt and it was to small ,maybe a diffrent year has diffrent sizes???i think the right size could be 22mm 23mm or 24mm.

    Chris20X,

I n your picture in Post #4. Do you grease the big rubber seal at all? Mine had a ton of grease on it, I don't know if that is right or not???
Inside of my brake drum was full of grease and dirt every where. Surprised the brakes worked.

Also do you grease the pivot points on the brake shoes ???

Just clean everything up good with brake cleaner. Your seal may be shot like mine (from trying to pry it with a screwdriver)
