    350x rebuild questions

well it looks as though it is about time for a rebuild on my 85 350x....its burning a little oil and smokes when first started or hard trottle....i think im gonna ride it thrue the winter in the snow and rebuild it here in a few months....i just want to know what to acpect money wise so i can start saving ....my questions are.... how hard is it to rebuild the motor still in the frame....or is it even possible....also what would be my best and cheapest way to get a top end gasket kit....i already have valve stem seals and rings...i just need the gaskets and i heard one is discontinued...if any one has any info it would be a great help.

burning oil when you first start it is valve guide seals, Maybe bad guides.
You have to pull the motor.
you can get a complete gasket set off e-bay

never had a problem with motor mount bolts or the case

sounds like you just need a simple top end job and it will run at least $200.....good luck

You will find you have to bore it. If you just put in new rings they will not last long.

its old and probably wore out
at least bore it to the next size ,and use a wiseco piston kit, have the head surfaced , and guides checked replace as needed ,atleast (lapp) the valves,or have a valve job done
    hows the crank?,
    oil filter?
clutch basket ok?-- any grooves wore in it ,if so file them down smooth again and it will be ok
you have a choice on the piston- 10:25:1 -- or 12:1 i would go 12 if i could
    dennis kirk has the kits
    timing chain-?/ tensioner,and guide???
    top end gasket kit is-28.99
a complete gasket kit from vesrah is 70.99
you going to put in a new cam while you at it ??- i got mine from web cam ,but got screwed on the core charge!!
    so i need one for a 200 x now

do every thing you want this time and youll be happier than if you didnt

all that would be nice if money wasint an issue here....but money is a major issue here....i just want to leave everything stock everything i do with this is gonna have to be the cheapest way possiable...im a poor college student and in the middle of doing a major overhaul on my trucks rear end.....my plan was to pull it apart hone the cylinder..lapp the valves replace the rings and valve stem seals and put fresh gaskets in it.

You dont NEED to pull the engine to do the top end. But i do higly recomend it because you will have to drop it in the frame (diffrence is you can leave chain and electrical on) For fast rebuilds thats the way to do it but its much better to take the engien out.

Also there is no need to bore it unless the cylinder is scared bad. Piston and rings should be changed and cylinder honed. Smoke on startup and under thorttle would meen you need a piston, not valveguides/seals

If you have any questions feel free to pm me, i rebuild these babies very often. Soemtimes even do it for the fun of it.

I just did this before Trikefest. I got new oem rings cleaned up all the carbon off the piston and head, lapped the valves added new seals and a light hone on the cylinder and a gasket set. It would have been nice to replace everything but its not reqiured. Listen to NOS. I was asking the same questions as you when I was doing this.

well you need to check the piston to cylinder for clearance
before and after honeing it you dont want to put it together if its past the ware limit-thats why i said to bore it,plus its???21 years old?? it could probably use it
and i know what its like to be poor-lol ,because i am!!
but its better to do all right the first time, but theres always room for error,so take your time
and since it is apart i was suggesting that you check the rod for ware,it doesnt matter how much money you have /or dont have when it comes to checking the parts---
