What causes these things to break so often?
I just think it's a bad design and there's too much stress where the reverse kickstart gear is. I am very careful when I kick mine now. Also, when the Tri-z came out, Yamaha never really had any time to work out the bugs from the 85 and 86 years. Maybe they would have fixed the problem in 87 if 3-wheelers weren't banned.
ive found that if your bolts are loose or your missing some in the kickstart area they WILL break!
when you kick the tri-z,it is always best to rotate the kicker down about 3 inches.if you try to kick the crap out of it from the top of the stroke,i think it puts too much pressure,on the side case.i have snapped a few kickers already, but no case.but mine was welded up real well and i think it made it stronger.also if the kicker gears are worn and letting the kicker shaft go cock-eyed,that can cuase them to break the side cover too.i say, dont kick the livin crap out of them and you will be fine.
Here is where my long useless list of stuff nobody cares about should go...

now if we could do something about the kickstart levers from breakin on high compression motors that would be a plus!
trx 250x kicker.way way stronger than any z kicker

Does it bolt right on?
yes but it needs a little grinding to miss the case

Another thing I did to combat breaking one was to ziptie a small piece of rubber hose to the footpeg. When you kick those things a full stroke the kicker smacks the pegs sending some nasty harmonics up the kicker. This trick completely eliminates that.
