    1985 Honda ATC 200X questions.

My father was the original owner of a 1985 Honda ATC 200x. He gave it to me a few years back, and I have been riding it frequently. I have done all the basic service, but now its time to do some major stuff I think. So here are my questions.

    1. The front fork seals are blown. I found new seals, but I dont know what weight fork oil goes in, how much, or where to fill from. Also, are the forks supposed to be pressurized? There is a fill valve at the top. If so, what PSI?

    2. What are some good methods to extract more power from the 200x motor? Id like to keep the 200cc motor, but maximize its potential. I do already have a Cobra exhaust, but nothing else. Piston? Cam? Carb? Let me know!

    3. The rear shock is in great condition, but id like to get a little more travel and plushness from the rear end if that is possible. I dont want something radical, just perhaps a slightly longer aftermarket shock?

    4. Are there any other big ticket items that are a "must have" for the 85 200x?

Any help would be appreciated. Also, feel free to post links to other resources.

    Thank you!

    - Andy

IF you really want to hop up the 200x, cam and valves and such, go to www.powroll.com. Those guys are four stroke masters. I have used many of their products and I must say, I was very impressed. Also a neat little trick is to use the carb of an XR200R, with the engine mod's and also going down to 18" turf tamer tires. The tires are cheap, lightweight, and get a lot of grip. The best piece to buy in fact would be the manual. You can still buy them from honda but most go to clymer. Be sure to ask many questions. Myself and quite a large amount of people on this board are infatuated with the 200x and know every little detail about it!. Good Luck!

Thank you. I did come across powroll after reading the entire restoration thread linked above. They do appear to have some great parts. Its a little bit more expensive then I hoped, but Im sure its worth every penny. The 200x is still ridden extensively by my wife, so I will probably do one little thing at a time... I dunno. I dont have a garage so its kinda hard. We will see!!!

So is the 200x special? Im not really aware of which models are the most sought after, and why. Do I have a gem on my hands?

And no, I wont sell it for $250.

First off, Welcome to 3 Wheeler World. And that is a nice looking trike you have, now get ready for a long post .

First off having a manual would really help, it gives step by step instructions on how to replace them (and everything else on the trike). A manual can be bought for about $25 or I think there is an electronic version in one of these threads.

    1. Fork seals – Disassemble the forks and replace the seals, reassemble the forks and add about 7 oz of 10W oil or auto trans. fluid in each top cap. The forks should not be pressurized, if you do want to add some air only go with a few pounds. If the front end is still too soft for your liking then you can run progressive springs (best but $80 option) or PVC spacers on the top of the springs.

    2. Mods are fun but you should figure out what you intend to use the bike for first and have a budget in mind. The performance pipe is a good place to start. Next

I would then get a better air filter and remove the air box lid or remove the whole air box all together and use a K&N filter with outerwear (as long as you don’t ride un wet stuff).

If you are planning on going into the motor then a Wiesco 10.25 : 1 compression piston would be a good choice. Remember to hone the cylinder or have it bored to the next size if needed. If you do go with this I would (and plan on doing so with mine) swap out the cam cover with one from an atc 185 or 200 so you have the manual decompression lever. The kick start gears can be a weak point even on the stock engines so you might as well save them from some stress. Oh, I would shy away from the 12:1 piston because it would require race gas.

A cam is another thing you can do without too much hassle. There are several choices with the most common being the Honda XR200 cam, Web, Powroll, and Megacycles cams.

As for the carb. The best and easiest option is to get a Honda XR200 carb. It bolts on to your intake but you would have to then port the intake to match up with the carb. Or you can use the XR intake. With the XR intake you will have to make your own air box hose though due to the different angle it has.

And as always re-jet after you mod.

    3. For the rear shock there is not too much you can do there. You could have yours re-valved or maybe get one from a company like works or something but you won’t be adding travel. If you really want to add travel you can swap out your shock for a 350X one but you will need a custom shock linkage. Search for Muddy200x, he has done this mod and posted a thread about it.

    4. For big ticket items see above. Other then that I would get some nice tires, tires make a big difference. Of course it depends on where you ride but I would go with some nice 20" rears or maybe some 18" one if you still have your skid plates. You may want to change your sprockets to make up for the gearing change but that is up to you. Also if you don't ride narrow trails then wheel spacers would be a good investment too. Adding wheel spacers and good smaller tires will stabiles the trike a ton.

Is this a really sought after machine? Well not really. They are nice but it is not anything that is “rare” or a collectors piece (unless in mint condition). The 1987 200x is popular with some due to it being the last year and the slight changes over the 86 model. Speaking of which the 86-87 200x is different then the 83-85 200x and most parts will not interchange between the two.

Wow, I am fairly certain this has been my longest post ever, lol can you tell I am in the middle of a 200x project myself.

Whoa. Thank you! Im impressed. I post in a few different forums, and I have never received such a warm reception. Very cool.

The only thing I am confused about is the decompression lever. Which valve covers have that?

Besides that, it all sounds great!! Now I just need to come to terms with not being able to ride it while I work on it!!

Cobra exhuast is already on the way, and I think ill start with the front fork!

The cool thing about this ATC is that my dad never rode it much. Proly because he had to raise me instead. Oh well.

OK, the 185, ('81) 185s, ('81) 200, 200e, 200m, 200es have the manual lever on the head. The 200s, ('82-'83) 185s, ('82-'83) 200, and XR200 have a lever on the head that you can hook a cable up too. I am going to try and run a cable up to the handlebars and then use a choke pull nob or something.

ok, this may be more than you will want to explain but I would appreciate any attempt.

I have new seals on their way. Ive got my 10W oil.

To change the seals, im guessing all I need to do is remove the fork from the triple clamps, remove the dust boots, remove the wiper, then remove the old seals, and reverse the process. Anything I am missing? thanks!

It is a little more involved then that. This is where having the book would really help, I will try and scan the procedure from mine and post it for you today.
