If it is just a lever around the top of the motor it might just be the compression release lever. My 200 motor and my 185 both have this lever on the top left hand side of the motor.

Hope this helps, and that I am correct.

A picture would be most helpful - at this point it could be a ATC200E (1st Gen. Big Red 1982 or 1983) or it could be a ATC200ES (2nd Gen. Big Red 1984 only) or possibly even a 200M. Is it shaft or chain drive?

I vote for 82-83. Says its got no rear suspension. 84+ were softtail right?
That lever is for hi and lo range. Best addition to any ute trike, IMO. Well....besides reverse.

200M doesnt have the gear reduction box. Well, my 84 doesnt.

84 Big Reds were hard tail. They changed to shaft drive and reverse.

Your correct, none of the 200m's had hi/lo range.

How the hi/lo range works: Parked in netrual you switched it from Hi to Lo or vice versa. Some times you had to rock the machine to get it to change properly. Do Not shift the Hi/Lo on the fly. It can cause the gears to break and they aren't cheap.
