Thread: Can't get the camshaft out of my 110. Got any pointers?

    Can't get the camshaft out of my 110. Got any pointers?

    I have been trying to get the cam shaft out of my 110 head, but it is clearly getting cought on something, preventing it from just sliding right out.

    I have:

    • removed the contact breaker

    • breaker assembly, lead wire

    • marked the back plate possition for easy reassembly

    • removed the automatice advance unit

    • removedthe camshaft dowel pin (tiny little booger)

    • removed the breaker outer casting

    • removed the recoil assembly

    • set the timing marks on the rotor to T (top dead center)

    • removed the right side cover (rocker arm side)

    • removed the two bolts that hold the camshaft to the sprocket

    Now, it should just slide right out, correct?!?!?! I haven't released the cam chain tensioner yet, but I don't think that would be the problem... would it? I mean, doesnt the cam just slide through the center of the sprocket?

    Man I am confused... Here's just some picts I took for refference during reassembly:

    Please, God, let somebody know... Thousands of registered users and nothing yet?!?!

    Do you think the rocker arms and valves need to be removed before the cam will slide out?

    I can't tell if the sprocket looks like the cam will go through it because the flange covers up the entire hole in the sprocket. As for a dot or an "O" as the Haynes manual states... I see none. I thought there would be one on the sprocket telling me to face it forward or this way or that... But by the looks of the chewed and almost stripped screws and bolts I have encountered during the disassembly, it's evident someone has been in there prior to me, so I am wondering if they put the sprocket back on backwards so this dot or "O" is on the inside on the engine, not the outside. I will try to rotate the cam to see if it is getting hung up on the design of the head, but it's awefully tight.

    Here are some more pictures I just snapped for referrence. Anyone see anything I may not have known to remove thus far? ANY thoughts are appreciated.

    I forgot to put the chain gasket in between the head and the cylinder in my 79. So what I did was remover the cam chain tensioner, got a screw driver and put as much slack as I could in the chain,remove the right side of the head, then get medium size flat screw driver and take rocker arms off the cam, then you might have to get medium length screw driver and put it in the end camshaft (leftside) and pull it forward and get another screwdriver and push the cam gear away from the cam and it should come out. I hope this helps you.

    The tension on the cam chain does make a difference when removing the cam.
    Here is what you need to do:
    Loosen the cam chain tensioner.
    Then make sure the lobes of the cam are pointing towards the bottom end of the motor.
    The cam should slide right out.

    On the timing gear sprocket there should be a small "o" stamped on the gear line this up with the index mark on the case, the cam should just slide out. when you install it then set your crank to "T" and alighn the mark on the cam sprocket and slide it back in.

    You might want to check that the cam is not 180 out. Turn it over till the bolts line up and try again. The cam lobes must be getting caught on the rockers.

    I noticed on the pics that the valve caps are still in place. I think if you loosen the valves, it should slide right out.
    Still looking for an "original" TC dual plug head for a 200X!
