Fuel tank decals, paint, and resto

So, I got decals for my 200S!! I've painted the tank before, and am going to refinish it again in prep for the new decals.

Question for those who have done this:

When you have refinished a steel tank,

Have you done a clear coat over the paint, then applied decals over that clear coat?

Or, have you applied the decals then done a clear coat over the paint and decals?

Have you done a clear coat at all?

What the best method for looks and function here?

Yes clear over the decals. But you have to shoot it in very very thin layers so it wont run.

ive always done automotive paint and if you get the reducer just right it comes out like glass with no need for a clear coat. here my 86 350x tank i just did.

Thats if you use acrylic enamel. If you use base coat clear coat automotive paint you have to clear it. IF you dont, it will have a finish like a paper plate and eventually peel off. The advantage of clearing over it would be this. If gas spilled on it, it wouldnt ruin the decal. IF its a laminated decal, you dont have to worry about it.
