1986 will have a gray motor, black top triple clamp, and says "ATC" on the side of the seat.
1985 has a black motor, both triple clamps are polished aluminum, and it will say "250R" on the side of the seat.
Also, the 85 rear shock canister has a black knob on it and the 86 has a gold one.
hope this helps

thanks guys
the major differences is: 86 has more rake, 86 has more fluid in the forks, 86 uses a 86-89 carrier, axle, brake hub, swinger, sprockets, 86 peg plates can accept 86/87 trx250r, 86/87 200x, and 350x foot pegs, 86 has less gussets in the frame, 86 uses a different cdi and harness and there is a huge laundry list of small stuff. Both are good bikes don't turn down a 85. You have to ride a 85 and 86 back and forth to really see the difference for most poeple(I notice every little thing)
