A steel stove will heat up your space the quickest. A cast stove takes time. Looking for a efficient one with a catalitic combuster? (most efficient). One without will burn wood alot faster. Make sure what ever you buy that it is sealed. Cast stoves typically are not seeled well. Stay away from the Vermont Castings Defiant stove. Poorly made and must be checked every year. I have one. a $2100.00 POS. Do a google search on stoves and you will find peoples opinions about stoves.

Another thing to consider is your insurance policy. I had a wood stove in my shop and my insurance company would not cover the shop. Some companies are very strict on wood stoves.

Hey Jack, I heat my entire house, and soon to be barn with wood, house alone is 3000 sq.ft. I could not find a stove to purchase new that will heat the way the older stoves would, granted your situation is a little different than mine was. Anyway I found a Timberline, and a Fisher on egay, and drove to Maryland and bought both of them, I paid less for 2 stoves, than you can get a new one for, and they do twice the work. Nice to leave the house in the morning, and come home 10 hours later with a nice bed of coals.

Call me if you want to talk about this, ok.

Go to a tractor supply store.
Buy a nice brand new box wood stove for about $200. No need to get fancy if your just heating your garage. just keep it at least 2 feet away from combustibles and pony up the money for a wall or ceiling pipe kit. ( this will cost between $500-$1500) depending on how much zero clearance pipe you need.
Do not cheap out in this area or your garage will eventually burn down.

    I have 3 stoves
2 in the main house and 1 in the my shop/studio.

I can probably answer any questions you have about woodstoves and woodburning.

second most important thing, burn SEASONED wood!!!!

Remember to clean your chimney every year too. My local fire department lends out brushes to do so; perhaps yours does too.

    Insurance can be a PITA with a wood-stove !!! .. i agree !

I installed an oil furnace ( a BIG one... ) in my garage with a 55 gal oil drum, instant heat.. no messing with wood and what not.. and when you leave.. you simply turn it off.. no worries about coals unatended...
    Currently :

    82 ATC - 200, plain jane, almost mint. ( Sold, 03-17-2005)
    84 ATC - 200 ES, Jimmy-Rigged, don't ask.( Sold, 03-17-2005)
85 ATC - 250 SX, Pride and Joy, Bottom-Less Money Pit.
    84 125 M - The Mini-SX not running yet. but won't be long.

My house is heated with wood. But wood gets pretty expensive to burn throughout the winter. So my uncle went out and got one of those wood pellet stoves. Real nice. Cheap, and more efficient than wood. Also a lot safer. Maybe you should look into one of those.

We have a woodstove for sale if you are interested. We used to heat our house with it, but have switched to a propane fireplace, because our living room is now on the opposite side of the house with no chimney. It's got a fan, ashtray...all the goodies. It weighs around 500-600lbs...

a little late to reply but i might as well. i just moved into the house i grew up in. the furnace is from the 50's. piece of junk. i had to do something for heat. saw a fireplace insert in the paper for $200. it burns wood and coal. burned wood for a little while but it just wasn't lasting the way i wanted. trien coal and love it. you may want to look for something like that.
