    swingarm removal on 225dx

im trying to replace an oil seal on my yamaha 225dx and i need to take off the swingarm to do it. i bought a socket to take out the retaining nuts on the swingarm hinge. do the threaded studs that the nuts came off of need to be taken off with an allen wrench? what i want to know is if im right about the fact that these studs just screw out and the swingarm drops off.

the seal in the engine? if so, just take the engine out, would be easier, i think.

i dont know that seems like a lot of work to take the engine out, but i guess that is a possibility. i already bought a socket for the swingarm nut tho that cost 7 bucks. ill think about it before i start doing much more but i think im going to just continue doing the swingarm

I had the swing arm off mine and it was pretty easy to remove. Just get out those allen head studs out and you are there. Good Luck Josh

when the rear end is all put together
it is hard to get the shaft back in the the yolk joint(i think)
    what i did
    i put a block on a tire
set frame on it so it will be high in air
the took a crate with a block on it and stuck rear end on it
slide it up to the motor
    went in easily
this is after about 2 hours of tryin to get it in there

ok cool. i got it the suspension off this morning and it was really easy im sure compared to the engine, its much lighter. it looks like i need a metric wrench to remove the u-joint. after that im not sure what happens, i dont have a manual but the guy at the local atv shop said the seal should come out w/ a screwdriver. i dont know if he knew that for a fact for my atc in particular or if that was just a generalization. have any of the 225dx owners in here replaced this oil seal im talking about? another thing i dont understand is the plate that the rubber boot sealing out dust and stuff from the u joint gets pushed back by a rod when its shifted into reverse. does anyone know anything about this setup?

do NOT us a screw driver to take the seal out
u have to take the 4 bolts out that holds that aluminum housing on u have to have a tool to get the big nut out from back of it
    it takes a special tool
not me i found a big nut that fits in the back nicely and welded another nut on the other nut and put cresent wrench on it
u know that saying lefty loosy and righty tighty
how to get that nut out is lefty tight righty loosy
    hope that made sence
then bearing and seal should come out easily

ok im kinda confused now. the way mine is set up, i dont know if this is right or not, is there is the tranny casing, and there is an aluminum disk around the driveshaft where it comes out. the disk is part of a larger piece, the rest is round but is smaller in diameter and it seems like one of the ends goes into the tranny. the larger diameter disk is where the boot seals and is almost flush to the end of the tranny. i have not taken anything off besides the rear swingarm and its boot when i am describing this. there are no bolts holding the aluminum disc down that i can see, and a rod pushes it back when i shift into reverse. after this aluminum part there is the universal joint that seems to be held on to the driveshaft by a nut that is extremely tight and im unable to get off. tri-z dude, is the aluminum housing you are talking about the disc that i am talking about? or are you talking about the housing on the rear part of the transmission that is held on by allen wrench bolts? plkmonster, any pics would be great because im not sure mine is set up right. thanks for all the help!

    where the joint is
it has that seal behind joint
it will be 4 bolts that hold the Disk or housing on get joint off and undo the 4 bolts that hold it on
pull it out and turn it over there will be a big nut inside that holds bearing and seal in the disk or housing
find a big nut to fit in the big nut in the housing or disk
find another nut to weld to the big nut that fits into the big nut in the housing or Disk
turn it to the right to loosen it
its backwards than normal but it works
    i hope that explains it
now to get the joint off
get a bar to hold between the joint (not where it connects) so it wont turn and put the socket on ther and loosen it up and take it off

well there are no bolts holding on the disk or housing on to the rear of the tranny. im trying to get the u joint off but i cant get the nut undone. i used a screwdriver to hold it still and used a cheater bar on the wrench but it is on there extremely well and i cant get enough leverage because the screwdriver is bending and its not long enough.

hahahahahahaha i finally got that mother off! i wedged a phillips screwdriver in the ujoint and against the frame. then i made a special wrench and put an adjustable wrench on that as a breaker bar, sat on the trike and pulled up as hard as i could while trying to keep my breaker bar from coming off. all of a sudden something gave way and the trike fell off its stand on my hand, i got it back up finally and hoped that it hadnt stripped out and that was what i felt. nope, i finally broke the torque on that thing, it was on there good! i still have to take it completely off its taking me forever with that short throw but now i got past another setback.

something is not adding up here. it sounds like after i get the u joint off i should be able to just pull the seal housing off. like i said earlier it does not have any bolts holding it on to the engine. facing the rear there is a weird inside out bolt that i think you are referring to. it is facing the rear, not the front, not like you make it sound. if this is how it should be, should i just be able to unscrew this inside out bolt w/ my special tool and it should come off the engine? i am confused obviously.
