Rim & Tire opinions..........

This is my first post so bear with me..... I am going to upgrade the rims and tires on my 01' Blaster.... My terrain is mostly packed dirt. But there is plenty of mud. I dont want a tire so aggressive that it over works my engine. For this kind of terrain what would you guys go with?

As for rims, it is between ITP and Douglas.... .190 no doubt........ are the comparible in quality?

I personally like spider trax tires. Rims? I normally run stock myself. But then again I ride a 350x.

Welcome to the site. I run Douglas red label rims with Maxxis Razr's on my Tri-z. I ride in the same conditions that you do. They hook up good in hard packed dirt. In the mud they handle pretty good as well. Hope this helps ya out. Good luck.

Razors suck, Fast trekkers all the way, i recomend 20x10x8 if using stock wheels or 20x10x10 if geting wheels and tires

I've got Holeshot copies on my TRX R (Carlise Badlands) And people say that those style and type of tires aren't good in mud, but I've had pretty good luck with mine. Their certainly no Wooly Boogers, GBC Gators, or Super Swamper Vampires (All strictly mud tires) But if you ride any amount out of the mud and like to slide, I would go with a low profile tire.

Welcome to the board! For the type of riding you describe, the stock Blaster tires, or something similar would be what I would recommend. I totally agree with your observation that a lot of the big mud tires are too much tire for the Blaster. Dunlap has bunch of knobby style variations that would work great. As far as rims, while both the ITP and the Douglas are .190 thickness, but the Douglas is much stronger because of how its made. The ITP.190 rates about like a Douglas .160, so Id go with tehDouglas hands down. As ALS250 mentioned, rockymountainatv has some of the better tire w/rim combo deals.

Looks like I have lots of choices... Its funny I posted the same type of message on BlasterHQ.com and didnt get 1 reply..... So I do appriciate all of your imput..... I like holeshots...... And we have Pure Sports on the SX that seem to hook up pretty good. Teh new SX has dirt devil, they look VERY aggressive!!! I will check out Fast trekkers I hear good things about them too.....

Honda300ex do you think if I increase the diameter of the rim it will take away from my top end? This was always my understanding.... ? The stock tires on it do OK, but in mud they just dont have it.....

You will lose alittle top end, but it looks awsome. I think it might be like 2-3mph you lose

Actually the rim diameter will have no effect on gearing. Its the overall tire diameter that effects gearing, so if you have a 20" tire on an 8" rim or on a 10" rim, your gearing will still be the same unless you change to an 18" or 22" tire. The advantage to a smaller rims size is you have more rim protection if you ride rocky terrain, and more tire flex if that is something desired such as in trail riding. The advantage to larger rims is reduced weight as tire weighs more than rim, and reduced tire flex which makes them more desireable on the track, but less desireable for trails.

TimSr's right, the rim has nothing to do with gearing. The tire diameter does. I have a set of 22x11-10 Trekkers. I ran them on my 84 Tecate and I like them ok. The 18x11-10 and 18x11-8 Trekker has a big center lug, where as the 22" doesn't for some reason. The 18x11-10 is super low profile which is awesome for sliding. but in trail conditions with aluminum rims I'd go 18x11-8 for more rim protection. raise the front sprocket 1 tooth to compensate for the smaller tires. I don't know much about a blaster so I don't know if the torque added by smaller tires is worth the sacrific on top speed or not. I'd rather have a quick bike than a fast top speed bike. good luck and let us know what you get. :-D

I would highly recommend ITP Spider Tracs on ITP .190 rims. My brother had those on his '86 ATC250R. They were awesome

I like the simple flat knobby tires like turf tamers. They are usually really cheap and seem to work really well with the lighter machines. I have them on my 200x and Tri Z and wouldn't change them. I ride in mud, water, snow, hard packed, everything, and they do well in them all.
