I've been wanting one of these for years and maybe I can finally actually get one around Christmas. I'd really like to get one of those totally self contained ones that copies onto a hard drive and around mini DV quality if possible. I don't really know a whole lot about cameras and stuff so what specs do I need to look at? I know the "lines" are quality I guess 480 is the best you can get? What about lumens for darkness and such? Any input appreciated...

I have one of those cheap ATC1000 jobs you can get on ebay. It can do 480 lines but at only 10 frames per second and the quality isn't great. You can check it out here.

Billy, I got mine from skullcams ( I think that's the ebay user name ). It's totally contained and seems to take good quality video. It cost me a pretty penny for it, but it has come in handy quite a few times. I can record and store 20 hours of video with it before needing to download. I have the ability to put it on the computer directly, or play it on the TV ( through the VCR ). I can get more information on it, and possibly loan it to you to check out if you want.

if you buy a mini dv camcorder, i seen a website where you can hook up a external cam that mounts onto your helmet from it, so you will need a backpack or something to put the actual camcorder in, or if its a small one put it in your pocket. that seems like the best deal to me, they only costed around 200 bucks if i remember ... sorry i cant help you any better. but i believe thats the best bet for a budget one

Skullcamz is his ID. My buddy bought one a few months ago. Not to bad, but he made one a little better then the sony cam he now has up for bid. Can either mount it on rider on or bike. Plus he has a break away connection in case he dumps so it doesn't shred the wires. I'll see if he can send me a pic of his setup.

Why don't you get one of those mini camcorder looking ones at target? I have an Apetek thats about the size of a pack of smokes and supposedly runs around 80 minutes on a charge. If you use a 1 GB SD card, it is supposed to 'tape' for the entire 80 minutes at 640x480. I don't recommend a smaller card and have it set to the 320x240 setting although because the resolution is not all that great. You can definately mount it on a helmet.

I have this helmet camera but its not self contained like you want. I connect it to an older camcorder that is about 5 years old, but it still takes good video. I have a camelbak / backpack that I put the camcorder, rope and anything else I need in.
