350x owners please help!!!

I have an '86 350x that I will be remodding soon. My goal is to keep it looking as original as I can but making it faster and more comforatable to ride. So far I have a new 12.5 to 1 piston and cylinder assembly, a used head assembly (I will be porting this one to accommadate the new higher compression), and a used 1986 frame (mine was cracked and very poorly repaired by the original owner). I will also be getting a used swingarm and extending it 2 inches, lowering the trike at least an inch, changing the carb, adding 2 1/2" wheel spacers or an extended axle, and getting the seat recovered by moshman. I have also been debating on whether or not to go with a 10.5 to 1 piston instead of the 12.5 to 1. My questions are: What type of cam should I use (I have been looking at both cams offered by powroll), What type of paint should I use on the frame (I am not going to powdercoat the frame), and what type of carb should I use? What type of riding do you do? If your going to extend the swingarm, lower it, etc...that makes it sound like a racer. If your going for a "race" trike then do the port job, stick with the 12.5 to 1 piston, lighten the flywheel, and get a race cam . I'm not sure what kind of carb you need, but the 400ex seems to be the most popular for a 350x upgrade.

I mostly ride trails, but I always have the throttle pinned. I will not be doing any organized racing with this trike, but I want it to be able to beat the punks who think their stock 450's will beat anything (their is a lot of little snots out here who's mommy's and daddy's have a lot of money and they think they are better than everyone). I will also be taking the trike to the dunes alot next year. I have looked into the 400ex carbs a little bit but I am still unsure if it is adequate for my application.

Well dont think that you're going to beat all the (little snots) on their 450s. They are pretty formitable competition after all. I would set more realistic goals as far as beating competitors in a race. Go for the 400ex then Suzuki z400, or kaw kfx400. Then if you do decide to race a modern 450 and win, please let the rest of the board know how you did it. All kidding aside 450 are fast and it takes a good running 2 stroke to nip em in the a**. I have used NAPA acrylic enamel for many years on many different machines and holds up very well. All paint chips so you can lessen the amount of hardner a bit and the paint holds up better. Factory frames have been painted with acrylic enamel for a very long time.

I know I will be unable to beat all of the 450's out there, I think I just needed to vent some frustration. I hate the fact that I work 50-60 hours a week just to make ends meet and then see some punk with an $8000 machine treat it like crap because he did not pay for it.

Right now I'm working on my 350x to make it a very fast trail and dune rider. I know top speed isn't gonna keep up with my buddies 450's, but I'm hoping with my mods everywhere else (besides topend) will be fair game.

You are right random strike. I guess sometimes I get worked up over nothing really. One thing I know is that I could go in debt $8000 dollars for a shiny new quad, or just keep my $800 dollar 350x and have even more fun with it. It is much less expensive to modify than a new quad and is more rewarding knowing I built it.

i hear ya man i love it when you say you have 250r and they think its a quad and then you show on your atc and outrun the 8000 machine thats definately a good feelen
