The wreck and road rash ?s

September 1st of this year I got in a pretty bad wreck on my 250SX. I broke my right collarbone and left leg (top of the fibula broke into three pieces) after flipping my machine on top of myself as I came over a large tabletop jump. I used too much throttle; got about six feet up in the air, over-rotated, seperated myself from the machine in the air, I hit the ground and the upsidedown machine landed directly on me and rolled down the otherside of the tabletop. I also received some gouges and scrapes above, below and behind my left knee. I was not wearing a helmet, jacket or even gloves. Somehow I did not hit my head or neck and did not scratch my hands or arms at all despite the fact I was only wearing and T-shirt and was on a gravel surface. I am amazed that I was not hurt more.

The trike took some damage as well; flattened the headlight guard, bent the handlebars downward, unseated a rear tire bead, put a three inch crack in the rear swingarm as well as bent it cuasing the whole machine to sit very out of level.

I've since repaired the machine and have once again been going on adventurous trips with it. I've healed up pretty well too. My softcast was removed after only a week becuase the bones in my leg were staying in place by themselves. After about three weeks I ditched the crutches and hobbled, limped, and eventually walked normally at around seven weeks. Crutches with a broken collarbone really hurts too. My collarbone appears to end a few inches shy of my shoulder. The outer piece is behind the inner piece. Surgery to correct this is not advised becuase it would cuase too much damage to the surounding muscles and shoulder. I have very good range and strength with the arm anyway.

Above my left knee I recieved three deep gouges; 3/8 inch deep by about 1 1/2 inches long. There is scar tissue on each of them but it has been slowly healing back into normal skin. These gouges were part of one big scrape that went from the outside of my knee to the inside that has now healed up normally and is no longer visible. I've continued to have an odd pain/numb sensation above my knee; most likely I damaged the nerve endings and fibers. It feels sort of like it's still bleeding or like skin that is thawing after being frostbitten. I have this feeling over an area about the size of my hand, which is larger than the area that got scraped. It also hurts very much to have even light pressure put on the area.

What I'm mainly wondering is will this odd pain eventually go away or lessen. Those of you who have had road rash in thier lives chime in about what you got and how it has healed.

PS - I don't want this to turn into a discussion about helmet use or lack of. There are plenty on this forum to read and add to already.

I took a major spill on my streetbike when I was younger, it left me beat up and sore, I had helmet/leathers on, so I didnt get any road rash, but I did go for a lond slide and my 900 ninja landed on top of me nocking me out cold, well it busted my face sheild into my face and it cut me right above my eye on both sides, and still to this day those spots are still very sore to touch, kinda weird fealing there sometimes to, so lets see that was 11 years ago and I still feal the effects.

The best I can do is just roll mine over on top of me and I almost went over the bars the other day the throttle got stuck open when I was climbing up onto this area they cleared of weeds and small trees. The trike stopped/bogged down on the other side of the 'road' but I kept going. I don't know why my bro mentioned the other time I tried getting out of a water cut rut kinda sideways sitting 'normally' on the trike and gave it a little too much gas. Just made it tip over and it stopped. I wish we had taken a camera for that kodak moment!

While skipping down pavement once I burnt a hole in my forearm so deep you could see my elbow. I had this Vaseline gauze stuff for about 2 weeks that I had to keep redressing until skin closed up the hole decent enough. It's been about 7-8yrs since then and besides the part that lost all skin the rest of the arm really looks good. I'm guessing I got lucky because once it all healed up I was left with no long term pain.

In another accident I broke my back and that one did take a long time to feel right (about a year). In the 5-6yrs since that injury it's only really knocked me down hard once and oddly it was pretty recent.

Moral of the story........... I hope you come out good but really only time will tell.
