The "T" mark shows where top dead center is. The "F" mark shows where the plug actually fires. On internal combustion engines the spark actually fires ("F") a few degrees of rotation BEFORE the piston reaches top dead center ("T"). This is because it actually takes the fuel some time to burn, so the timing is set such that combustion starts before the piston it at the top. Your points should JUST open at the "F" mark NOT the "T" mark. Also, the "O" mark you are talking about is the one on the cam sprocket. It should point to the marker when the "T" mark is lined up with its pointer. Make sure that these marks line up correctly so your valve timing is right. (Piston at top dead center, both valves closed.) As you know, the ignition timing is affected by this as well since the points assembly is located and driven off of the camshaft. And by the way, I have seen plugs that will fire outside of the cylinder (hanging off of the plug wire) but won't fire under compression. It's harder for the spark to jump the air gap in that environment (under pressure). Your new plug is probably fine, but it's not that uncommon for a fuel fouled plug to fire outside the cylinder, but not in it. Hope this helps.
Mine was dying on the trail and everything seemed all right. It turned out the spark plug had only around 5 k ohms and the new one around 27 k. I figgered it was burned up inside or something. It works now with the new plug. I guess that resistor or the spring inside were burned up and wouldn't make contact when the plug was upright.
