I need your opinions (86 200x basket case)

I went to look at an 86' 200x today....let me know if you guys think its worth the price...I'll list the good and the bad....

    GOOD:
    1. frame,no cracks or welds
    2. forks, seem pretty stiff..
3.tires really good, wheels good with some dents
    4....it runs

    BAD:
    1. shifter shaft is broken off ,and has been welded on before
    2. kick starter shaft wobbles pretty good
    3. leaked oil in about three spots that i could see, case doesnt look cracked
    4. front brake caliper missing
    5. rear shock is shot
    6. Tank dented really bad but doesnt leak

Things wrong but I dont really care about (to much):
    1. plastic shot
    2. wrong seat
    3. wrong exhaust...clamped to frame...melted plastic and rear brakeline
    4. carrier bearings shot

The guy is asking $350...firm ...do you guys think its worth it.?..the motor and the tank are the two things that worry ne the most..

Ya $350 I would have it home by now. I really like the 86/7 200X though. It is one of my favorite Hondas. It just depends on how much you are willing to put in it. It runs so that is a start.

Eh...there is ALOT of work there. I'd point out everything it needs and offer him $250 and see if he bites. Then walk away. I'm all about fixer uppers but that one really really sounds rough.

hmmm, parts are alot harder to find and more expensive than the earlier 200x's... better pass this up and send the info on to me..

I agree with dredhead. Alot of us around hewr say "well I'll just buy it and make it a strong runner"... next thing you know your knee deep in dept searching ebay all hours of the night looking for parts. Weeks later your thousands of $$$ in the hole and by then your to scares to ride the damn thing.

I say go for it... watcha gotta loose???

I offered him $300 cash but he didnt bite....and the more I looked at the motor the more I started to wonder....if it wasnt for that I'd have brought it home with me......I just dont know if I should get it or hold out for a 350x (which is what I really want)....I'm just not sure.

I would stay away. It sounds like you will be dumping a few hundred dollars just to get it into a good trail machine that doesn't look all that great. The cost of parts adds up fast, very fast. Just fixing the "BAD" stuff and your looking at about $200. Then fixing the other things and your out lets say another $200. Now you have $750 in a machine that could still need more. That is now in the price range of a nice runner that looks good, something that you won’t have to question what could go wrong next.

From what it needs I am guessing it has not had the easiest life, the description makes me think it is like most beat machines and will need most of the non engine bearings replaced along with the brakes gone through.
