You could look for a trx 350 head. I found one on ebay for $40 or something like that. It needed valves (the stockers hit the piston). I figured for $40 it was worth the gamble. I now have the head on my rebuilt 350x and it works great. Their is no noticeable difference in the heads. I have pictures of them both next to each other if you would like to see them (decided to post pics as well, the cleaner one on the piston side is the trx head, the one with rust on the valve guides is the trx). I have also been watching good trx 350 head assemblies on ebay sell for a lot cheaper than 350x's. Or you can still get a complete head assembly from honda for $600.

I don't see it as a big deal.. Honda donated them because they had a bunch of ATC's they could no longer sell. Yes, I'm sure Honda donates alot of stuff but at some point they were glad to give away ATC motors.
A torn up head could be a benefit to a student, they could see firsthand the results of a lack of oil and the resulting poor performance.

Your head can be fixed. But after spending the time to indicate the head in and machine it, it could cost a couple hundred then you still have to buy all the other parts. If I needed a 350X head, I'd grab the crate head on EBAY for 399$. It's fully assembled and new.....
