raffa is correct. you can use a tap, and tap out your stock 85 thumb throttle.then convert to the 250 r cable. on my 85 z I just bought the factory 1 piece throttle cable for the 86 tri-z and used a banshee thumb throttle the banshee blaster and warrior throttles are already tapped out to recieve the new cable..as far as chain rollers,I run a banshee lower roller with a banshee upp brand rear chain slider.I am unaware of where to find the top roller.
Here is where my long useless list of stuff nobody cares about should go...

i must be missing something ... the cable i have on it is threaded in. has someone else already done this to mine, or what do you have to tap?

I have the 86 cable on mine, but I moved the cable adjuster lock nut to where I wanted it, locktited it, and then ground the threads off the cable end so it would drop into the 85 throttle housing. I thought about tapping the throttle housing, but it looked like it would be awful thin. The easy solution is a Banshee or Blaster Throttle, which are a dime a dozen, and the 86 TriZ cable. The 85 cable system is horrible, which is why they dropped it.

My 86 TRX250 throttle cable had the carb cap as part of the cable assembly, and would never have worked. Maybe the ATC is different, but its probably easier to stay with the 86 TriZ cable for future replacements.

If your cable is threaded at the thumb throttle, and the thumb throttle itself is threaded,I would guess you have a 86 tri-z cable setup on it.
The 85 tri-z had a non threaded cable end at the thumb throttle. It basically just butted up to the throttle housing. There was also a fulcrum box about halfaway down the cable behind your radiator shroud. These were known to hang up and cuase problems.

If you have the stock carb on the tri-z,then get a 86 tri-z cable, and a banshee, or warrior, or blaster thumb throttle. The 86 cable fits the stock 85 carb and will thread into the banshee or blaster or warrior throttle housing. The 86 tri-z cable was a 1 piece design without the fulcrum box.It is hard to tell what you have without pics of the set-up.
