Question Tri-z running like a coo

I`ve just got hold of a 85 tri-z and just got it running which is fine til i try and move it, if i stick it in gear i`ve got to give it almost full revs and work the clutch to try and pull away otherwise it dies.

it was gradually gettin there (starting to pull a bit better and pick up speed) and then i switched it off tried to restart it and it backfired then ran crap so i changed the plug it was fine for about a minute then same again only there was oil round the plug around the head mind you i only hand tightened the plug and came back out about 2mm but why the oil?

does it need rings? is the carb needing cleaned? or is it something more sinister?

First off welcome to the boards

Most of the time, its a good idea to clean the carb. Dosent sound like thats your problem though....

The oil on the plug could just mean your running way to rich, and you need to rejet. You dont neccessarily need new rings. You can do a compression check to see where your at though. Good compression for the Z is between 150 and 200

Are you sure your starting out in 1st gear? gears are 1 down, 4 up.

You should pick yourself up a manual if you dont already have one. You can download one to your computer from this link:

Once again welcome, and good luck. You should post up some pics of your ride!

definately starting out in 1st gear when it was starting to run slightly better it was gradually picking up speed but no where near what z should be as i was having to ping the clutch and i should have been thrown off it but the back end was starting to kick out then.... ....nothing?

My first thought was that you need to adjust your clutch. That dosent explain why it would die on you though...........

So the bike ingages fine? You just cant get it to go without ragging the clutch? Does it feel like its slipping?

if it wasnt dying then i would think it would be the clutch but the clutch wasnt even adjusted properly, the cable was loose then i fixed it so thats the clutch ruled out.

its not the pick of the litter but its z none the less, oh yea it was seized when i got it but a wee rock back & forth & new oil soon sorted it.

thats exactly what its doing, after reading the owners manual i think that it may be a carb problem although why would it run ok then try n die when in gear?

    Exclamation

    1. Drain the Old Gas by removing the Gas Tank

    2. Add Fresh Fuel , Mix at 32:1 with 2 Stroke Synthetic oil

    3. Clean the Carb or ReBuilt kit if possible

    4. Change the Clutch Fluid

    5. Clean your Air Filter or Just Buy a New one

    6. Buy Few Spark Plug's

    7. While your Cleaning the Carb Check to see if the REED'S are Damage or Week
To be honest if they havn't Been Changed Just Buy New one's .

    .................................................. .................................................. ...........

You'll be in way better shape after you take care of these Step's

yea your probably running it way to rich so when you put stress on the engine it cant keep high revs and bogs down, does it smoke alot? Hey a quick video of you doing it and showing us what it does would help. Also clean your carb and clean your airfilter.

i`ll try and get a video of it if i can get it to start, are they always a pain to start?

i`ve been having to put a small drop of fuel straight into the carb via the intake just to start it then its fine til i switch it off.

Mine starts really easy. I usually kick it slow for 2-3 times (just to roll everything over) then stab it and it lights right off.

it sounds like your pilot jet is clogged, so a carb clean is in order.

sounds like a fuel delivery problem, enought to get it going and then quicly drying up so then it would die, possible problem with fuel pump? but i would go with Ceaser on everything first then check fuel pump or it could be just that.
