    Tri-Z is screwed

I just replaced the crank seals in the 85 Z. I put it all back together and the kick starter seemed to be stuck...so i just took the clutch cover off tonight and i pulled everythjign apart i thought it was the kick mechanism because it had given me trouble before. Looked fine,

So i pulled out the spark plug, put a wrench on the primary drive gear to see if i could rotate the motor, and it wont budge?

Before the crank seals it would turn over fine.. is there some way they could be compressing the crank bearings? I tapped them in with a large socket, but only far enough that they seated.

    WHATS GOING ON!!

that should not be the issue, tare it down and inspect it, sounds to me like your crank is not set right in the bearings it will turn real hard if its off

first take the clutch cover off and inspect the clutch and primary drive gear and see if something is binding there

Did the crank turn free before the top end was installed?

I had the same problem with my tecate motor. It sounds like the crank bearings are not seated right. I just gave the crank a wack with a piece of wood to push it over more. You should be able to do this with your mag cover off and clutch cover off. You could tell the clearence was off on one side and when I rolled my motor over without the cylinder and just the complete crank cases it seem tight on one side and did not roll over smoothly.
    I hope this helps.

I didnt replace the top end or split cases. I installed crank seals from the outside.

After I found out it wouldnt kick over, I tore the clutch side down again, took the clutch off and everything. Then i tried turning the crank by the primary drive gear nut and it wouldnt budge.

That means its nothing in the transmission, has to be something crank related.

It kicked over fine before this.

crank seals won't stop a crank from turning, even if they are in to far.

you have the clutch basket off, and still can't turn the crankshaft over?

Yes clutch basket is off. There is nothing meshed with that primary drive gear.

I cant get the crank to turn over by using a wrench on that nut (when clutch basket is off)

It wont crank at all, I got it maybe 1/16 of a turn, but i was afraid i was going to break something if i turned any harder... THIS IS WITH THE BASKET OFF, and spark plug out.

I agree that new seals would not hinder the crank from spinning.Maybe you have a broken piston ring hung in one of the ports in the jug?????.Have you checked the stator to make sure something has not come loose and hanging up over there?are your primary crank gears on backwards and grounded out on the case? are you misssing a spacer to keep the primary gears from hitting the case?
