    Question 83-84 250R Engine Swaping?

I did a search but did not really find exactly what i was looking for. My 83R recently bit the dust and was wondering if there were any motors off other machines that would easily fit into the 83R frame. Any help would be great, Thanks.

I think air cooled cr250 cylinders interchange but the bottom of the motor I think you are stuck with atc250r 81-84.

yea the old elsnore air cooled bikes fit, but there trans will leave you running every where wide open at 45 mph, lol, or you can put in the legendary CR480 air cooled motor!! and destroy!!

the mechanic at the shop has a pic of an 84 that he used to drag back then and he had a 480 in it, and as far as I know he said it was almost a direct bolt in, he said it was insane on his bike, of course it was bored and ported and had all the goodies, next time I'm there I will talk to him more, aslo they have a cr 480 there that he's tryiung to get me to buy (it needs a complete rebuild) hopefully for the low low, but I dont want to take apart my 300 for that I would need another air frame.

the 480 is not a complete bolt in mod, you do have to build new motor mounts, and make sure the sprokets aline properly... other then that, it is a pretty forward install. Also, a custom exhaust pipe has to be built.

I'm actually doing this now, you need new mounts, custom pipe, but just looking at the 2 motors side by side they are really close. I'll post more pics of it as I get farther into it

Just wanted to add an update as I'm doing this same swap right now. Two other things that will have to be addressed are the kick start and the shifter, both will need to have the shafts lengthed to clear the frame. I'm just going to have a machine shop mill a shaft that slips onto the spines then adapts back again probably about 2 inches long. If anyone has any input on this I would appreciate it.

I put the motor in the frame just as a test fit before I started tearing it down and it looks close but like I said you have to fix those things and make some motor mounts. Also, I'm planning on using a stock 480 pipe but having it lengthened about to inches on the lower part to have it line up nice. I have pics but they arent uploading, says there too big

Not trying to hijack your thread, just saw that you asked for input from anyone who has done this before. Well I'm learning as I go and I can throw up a few pics if you want. Still got a long way to go, but I hope to have it done before trikefest. Good luck with whatever you end up doing
