WTF is up with my cam chain tentioner?

I went to adjust the cam chain tensioner in my 185S, followed the instruction in the clymer manual, no luck, still noisy. I even pulled the 6mm bolt out the top and poked a tool down there to see if it could loosed it up, no luck. Can I pull the large nut on the tensioner with out anything falling down in there? what else could it be? I really dont want to have to tear into the engine, but I also have the fear of the cam chain slipping since it did it to me on another 185.

maybe the adjuster is stuck or the chain is stretched past the range of adjustment
