    valve adjustment

    hi folks, i need a little help , i need to check the valve adjustment on my 1984 ytm 200 el but in the service manual section there are only parts catalogs, can someone walk me through this please? thanks in advance guys!

    I don't have your manual... Basically, you need to get to Top Dead Center on the compression stroke - it must have timing marks behind covers or plugs somewhere. Honda is .003 and I'm sure it would get it started for any model. Hopefully someone else will post that has this model....

    Valve Adjustment
    Take the valve covers off and line the "T" mark up with the notch. If both valve rocker arms have a little play in them then check there cleacence, if they don't both have play then spin the rotor over once (1 rotor rotation) = 1/2 a cam rotation) and line up the "T", now they should both have play. The clearence is intake = .05-.09 mm (.002-.004 in), exhaust = .11-.15 mm (.0043-.006 in). Now pull the engine over a few times and check again.

    While you are at it I would also adjust the cam chain! >>>>>>

    Cam chain Adjustment
    Put the engine with the "T" make at the notch and both valve arms with play. Take off the cover for the cam chain adjuster and loosen the locknut. Turn the adjuster (that main threaded piece with a 10mm head on it) so the pushrod that is inside the adjuster is flush with the end of the adjuster. Now start the engine and the pushrod should more slightly.

    hey thanks guys but since i am a real noob when it comes to atv engines can you post some pics please? i kknow my way around a crotch rocket engine and a car engone but i am completely new to this! the only reason i am doing this is because it sounds like something slappin around in the motor when it idles and runs and the small engine shop said its the valves. this sound right?????

    I love ya fellow trike brotha' from another motha', but you really need to just grab a cheapo Clymer manual which will eliminate all the guess work.

    I'm assuming your top end is noisy?? Could be lack of oil or lots of different things. Or, did you just rebuild the top end?? A motor is a motor but you need to grab up a specific manual for your model.

    yeah i agree with your assesment on the manual but im kinda short on cash right now and who better to ask than the pros! but yeah lots of top end noise i just had the gears replaced and i put a new clutch in but im stumped on this valve isssue. it actually sounds like the cam chain slappin around in there. is that probable?
