best way to clean off old head gasket

I tried using a razor blade with a handle type deal and going at a very slight angle scrape the old gasket off but it tends to gouge if I'm not careful. A wire wheel will just eat the aluminum right up. Any ideas to get it squeeky clean without destroying the surface of the head?
