do either have a battery that you could check to see if your Neutral Indicator light comes on while in neutral? If they do not come on, check the reverse/neutral plug connection down by the gear shifter.

If you don't have spark I'd jump out both the keyswitch and the on/off slide on the bar switch which will eliminate them as a problem.

Then I would check the frame ground and then see if the coil has the correct resistance.

Last would be the CDI or a break in the wires. I have seen the 85 SX have a bad connection right at the CDI plug under the taped wires, so check it out!

A pulse generator coil will also leave you without spark. It's a inexpensive piece thats under the stator located in the stator cover. It does require taking off the stator side cover and starter gears. So pay attention how they go in reverse order. It's not a bad job if your mechanically inclined. I think they're about $40. This happened to a friends 85 sx. Still running great. But start with the most obvious causes first, as stated. Good luck

I thought neutral only affected the electric start from working??

I believe it would have spark without that switch working. I'd have to check the wiring diagram to be certain.
