Question I'm new @ this and I need help

Hi guys. I bought a yamaha trimoto 200 FIXER UPPER, and I mean a fixer upper. It's got spark ( installed new spark plug ) and gas ( poured some down the cylinder ) but it wont run. I was told by someone to check and see if the woodruff key is sheared off. Apparently this has something to do with the timing. ???? Also when put it into gear, it sounds like it is going into gear, but there is no resistance from the rear wheels when you push it forward. ????? I also have to rebuild the carb. Gas is leaking out of it when I open the tank valve. I've ordered a manual thru ebay and i'm eagerly waiting for its' arrival. I bought it for hunting here in Ontario, Canada and can't wait to get it going. I told you its a fixer upper. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks i n advance!!!!

click "User Cp" at the top of the page then on the left hand side it will say "edit avatar". upload your photo then.

I may be wrong but if the key is sheered it wont have ANY spark at all. I think the first thing you need to do is get a compression checker and see how much psi your putting out. if it is really low on compression it will not start and will e very easy to push while in gear

as long as the flywheel turns it will make spark...maybe not at the right time but it will make spark.

but if there is no woodruff key the crank wont spin correct? Because the key goes between the flywheel and crank to keep them in sync. So There would be spark but you wouldnt be turning over the engine right?

nope you would have spark even if the key was sheared. because the starter cage that the pull rope turns is meshed directly to the CRANK not to the FLYWHEEL..its not very often that the woodruff key shears on them because when you pull the cord it doesnt put stess on the woodruff key

It's probably flooded if gas is pouring out of carb when you open up tank v/v, I would say you have a plugged and gummed up carb. Taken apart and clean everything especially little holes in jets. I know you said you had spark so it's probably the carb. But fix carb up first and get rid of old gas in tank. Don't worry about spark until you fix the obvious. You might find spark isn't a problem at all. Let us know how you make out.
