get a bottle of OSFO it is osforic acid brand name OSFO. it is a rust killer/treatment you get it at hard ware stores or a marine store.
and get a big box of BB gun BB's like copper heads or something.
poor a good bit of asfo in the tank and a good bit or BB's and shake teh hell out of it for a long time. that allways worked for me.
when i was a kid i would use rocks and gasoline and shake it. that worked prety good to. but i dont do that no more.
POR-15 makes an amazing cleaner/rust remover. You can find it on Ebay. Some of the guys on here use Muratic Acid avalible at most hardware stores. Or you could just take it to a local radiator repair shop and have em clean it and pressure test it.
Ad some gas, and spray a bottle of oven cleaner inside , now dump like 200 bb's and give her a shake for sometime rinse repeat.

A buddy of mine put a bunch of pea gravel in the tank, wrappred foam around it and duct taped it, then threw it in the dryer for an hour. Said it worked like a charm.
Just make a new one. You may find pinhole leaks after you get done.

So many idiots that can't ride a motorcycle, so few hours to put my boot in their seat!
Myeh heh heh heh heh!!!
make a new one! how in the world...
I've used Por 15, and although it is an excellent cleaner and very very easy to do while doing an excellent job of plugging holes...I would not recommend it for a restoration. It is very messy and requires a lot of grinding work to be done. If you are looking for a restoration job...take your tank to a Radiator shop. They should be able to get all the rust out while still having that Metalic shine inside. Or go the acid route. But for a restoration, por15 doesn't fit the cut.
Rest in peace Rex Carlson
I used this stuff called Evapo-rust. It is enviroment friendly, safe on paint, hands and lungs. Search it on the net or ebay, you can find a gallon for under $20 (They have small bottles of it at AutoZone, but it would get expensive to do a tank). I did my ATC70 and 350x tank with the same gallon. The 350x tank I rotated every few hours for a day (or buy enough to fill the tank ideally). If you keep it warm it works faster. Ater soaking it, rinse with water to get clean, then pour Evapo-rust in again, swish it around to coat, empty and air dry (as a short term rust inhibitor). Once it was dry I poured in some Seafoam and swished it around to coat all inside and make sure there was no moisture left. I did the 70 over a month ago and still haven't put gas in it, still shiney! Did the 350x last week. You can see the light discoloration of the metal where the rust was, but it's silver now! I didn't believe it either, seemed like snake-oil to me, but I'm impressed with how it came out.

Scary I have never heard of that Evapo-rust. I might give your method a shot some time. I would be nice to seem metal in the tank & not sealer. Not that it really matters.
i use " the works" its a tub and shower cleaner thats got acid in it. i cleaned 2 tanks with it and they came out looking good.
i just ordered some red kote off of ebay for 32 bucks shipped. i plan on doing the muriatic acid, acetone cleaning with baking soda and water, and then the kote.
