Search for posts for the clutch update kit. Its a kit that replaces the clutch lifter and lifter bearing. The old single steel ball bearing can weld itself to the lifter arm and make for a realllly hard pull. Also, heavy duty springs make this condition worse, as well as a basket with grooves worn in the fingers.

Has it ever had clutch work done?

IF i were you, I'd pick up that update kit from honda, new friction plates and steel plates, a new hinson clutch basket, and a new gasket, and do it all at once.

It will cost 200 for the basket, 75 for the kit, 75 for the clutch, and 15 for the gasket but combine all of that with a new perch and youll be good to go.
