    So you hate golf?

I am not sure how grips are installed on handlebars, so I used the technique I use to install golf grips. Of the ones I have taken apart, it seems like alot of duct tape is the norm.

I had some double sided sticky tape, like masking tape. Here is an example:

    http://www.randmh.com/php/page.phtml?page=0826

    1. Remove old grips and clean handlebars, wipe down with acetone/lacquer thinner and clean all residue from bars.

    2. Put the double sided sticky tape on the bars, I had to use two strips of 3/4 tape. If you have gorilla size hands you can layer more tape.

If using old grips spray some cleaner on the inside of the used grips, let that dry if new grips go to next step.

    3. Pour mineral spirits into the grip and then put your finger on the outside hole and pour mineral spirits onto the tape. This makes the tape gooey and slippery,

    4. Slide the grip over the tape and let dry in 70 degree weather for at least an hour. Colder areas take longer I am sure. This keeps a golf club grip on so I dont see why it would not work. I also did one for on my friends street bike.

So easy even a caveman could do it.

that sounds like it would work good, but they make a glue specifically for putting grips on.

I figured they did, I do not have any and those supplies I had. What does the glue cost? Just curious.

well at the TF'06 MX we were all using Zip ties because nothing else would keep the grips on. I still had a handfull of grip OFF the bars on some turns anyway

I use spray paint, and stainless wire. the wire rocks. I can't even try to get the grip to move now.

Grip glue sucks in my experience. Glossy spray paint has always worked best for me. You have to make sure your handlebars have a good coat of paint on them though because if they're bare metal, the paint won't hold and the grips will spin. If the metal is showing, sand it down, hit it with a self etching primer, paint them with a couple coats of glossy spray paint, let dry. Now right before you put the grips on put another light coat on the bars and spray some inside the grip. They'll slide on super easy. Make sure you have something handy to clean up the excess. Allow it to dry overnight. I haven't twisted any yet when following ALL of the steps above. Anytime I take a shortcut I get slippage.

Old Schoolers used Auqa Net Hair Spray. The stuff was super sticky and the fumes were fun too!! LOL. We used the stuff way back in the early '80's on our BMX racers. I've used Renthal Grip Glue with great success. 3M Super Adhesive as well. It's all in the prep.. Clean bar, clean grip and LET THE DAMN STUFF DRY for pete's sake!! Mechanic's wire is very effective in keeping grips on.

    On a side note....

I've never had good luck re-using grips. They always fit loose after swapping them from bar 2 bar. Grips are cheap. Snag a new set when you change out bars.
