carb questions (atc200es bigred)

ok, i have just looked at the manual that damnit has put together for everyones benifit, and i must say thanks it makes my life alot easier, but i am confused, i have had the fuel line runing to the port on the top of the carb, the one next to the throttle body, but in one of the pictures, it shows the fuel line going to a port on the side, right above the choke, i fiqured ;huh, that would explain why i cant get it started', well i connected it there and i tried starting it once, i got a little feedback, but the battery was almot dead, so i put the bike on the charger and went inside, i come back out and my garage now has the pleasent oder of gasoline, and a nice size puddle to match, the gas went right into the carb and out of the hose on the bottom (over flow hose?) so i figured that i put the fuel line in the wrong spot, i am now confused could someone tell me where the fuel line is supposed to go, pictures would be nice, it would be great if this is the only problem with my bike

I am not familiar with the big red, but a carb is pretty common when being tuned etc. On my 250r the float bowl adjustment is what allowed me to stop the fuel from overflowing. There is a "tang" that needs to be bent and then you measure from carb to base of float for correct adjustment. I have a total of 6 carbs all stock R carbs and not a single one had the correct float bowl height, 18 inches if I remember. Now that you have a manual that adjustment should be indicated.
Give the carb a good cleaning, blow out all passages if you have not done so already, with carb cleaner and compressed air.


The other thing that I noticed was there is on the needle valve, the bracket that allows the valve to hang from the float, if it was rotated backwards I would also get a overflow. Again 250r carb, 85 or 86. Just something to note.

You may also want to inspect your float and make sure no pinholes or bent brackets not allowing the float to move up and down. Saw this on my buddies 2-stroke boat motor, but certainly possible.

Ok, the gas line in is where you hook up the gas tank. This hose is the largest of the 3. The vent is just a tube that should be about a foot long and just vent to the atmosphere. The drain/overflow is a plain tube that should get tucked behind the engine. If you open the drain screw above it you can drain the carb. or if the float is out of adjustment, stuck or the needle valve is bad gas comes out of this tube.

oh, ok thanks that answered my question, but what confuses me is that in the manual the picturer showed the fuel line going into the vent, well i took off my carb and im gooing to make some adjustments tonite, im hoping that the only thing wrong with my bike is the carb

ehh, i give up, its been a little more than a year and i need the bike runnig before june, so im just going to take off the plastics and put it in a shop, which was the lat thing i wanted to do

Relax, drink a beer, kick back. Do not let a deadline put you down (I am assuming TF07 still two months away.) Are there any members here who live nearby??? I had worked on cars as a hobby before my addiction. I had never rebuilt an ATC carb, now I take them apart regularly, weekly. These Honda machines are well built and easy to work on.

The manual is a guide, they make mistakes. thefox put up a great pic. Take the carb apart. Get a large clean towel. Lay out the parts clean them, look for wear. Set the carb up according to the manuf. specs and move on to the next item. Go through your wiring, disconnect, clean all connections and then use di-electric compound to seal them. Test all electrical equipment with multi-meter. I would imagine new spark plug, if not change it. Do a compression check. You have now done everything to an engine to get it to run.

I sold a 250es to sykolincoln, I was convinced it would not run, did not really care anyway as I got it with a bunch of 250r's and parts. He got it back to his house and got it running. At the time if I was a betting man he would have had the odds and a big payout. It was rough!!!

lol, well I'm going to give it a couple more tries, today i spent the whole day stripping down the bike, i found i have 2 stripped bolts that are gonna be hard to get off, i am also missing some supports for the rear rack so i can always fix that along with the many other small problems with the bike, but the thing with the carb is that i took it to a shop last year to get rebuilt and the bike still wont run, so I'm guessing that its something with the engine, and to make it worse i don't have any of the right tools i need to work on the bike, all the bolts i got off today were with standard size wrenches, so im gonna have to save up alot of money in order to get this bike back to its prime, to make it worse i'm 14 and i don't have a job, so the saving part could take a bit lol

If you'er fustrated with something you've been trying to fix and your not getting anywhere with it, just walk away for a while and rethink things over or do something else to get your mind off it. Eventually, something in your brain will click and give you fresh ideas to try. Write down what you've tried and what you're goin to try. Once you're really fustrated, your mind wont think straight and will only focus on the negative things. Trust me, I've been doing this day in and day out at work. I build automated machinery for the automotive industry, and every machine is a prototype. We only build one of, and we have to make it work in a very short period of time. Get that deadline out of your head. It only preoccupies your mind. Just focus on the machine, and don't give up. Your personal satisfaction when you get it running will be overwhelming.

ok so i narowed it down to this: carb needs adjustment,
piston o-rings need to be replaced,
change oil,
muffler (does that affect the engine starting?),
air filter (does that affect engine starting?),
spark plug gap,
clean fuel strianer,
put new gas in tank,
check electical
and im sure there is more, i jus have to decide where to start, might as well start with the carb, cas i already have that off the bike

i just bought new tools, and some parts for my bike, hopefully i can also repaint some things, all i need now is to get it running and a new muffler, i would also like to locat the original stickers for my bike, my goal is to make it look better than new
