    86-87 200X front caliper ?'s

A friend of mine has an '87 200X with a dragging front brake. What are the options for rebuilding or replacement? I've been watching eBay for a used replacement but their isn't much to be had for the 2nd gen 200X's. Are there any others that swap in(83-85's)? Does anybody know the part # for the rebuild kit?

You could take it apart and clean it up real good. Take it to a shop and have them take the caliper piston out and hone it and the bore real nice for you. Get new seals and clean the pins up real good and it should work like new. This was done to both the calipers on our 200x and it worked like a charm and was cheap.

get a caliper from a the rear of a 2000 or so kx80 dirt bike. i di the swap to my 85 200x. just use the steel 200x mounting bracket over again and attach the kx caliper to it.

i started a thread about it on the Mad Scientist section.

Most of the time a sticking brake is caused by the one mouning / slide pin being stuck in the caliper. Take it apart and clean it and give it a try. Most of the time it only cost you some time.

That's something I hadn't thought of. Like I said, it's not my machine, so I didn't want to tear into it without some plan of action. I could check out the slide pins though. Thanks for all the advice.

OK, you were right Howdy. The larger diameter slide pin is stuck tight. I've tried turning it and squeezing it in a vice and it won't budge. I even applied a little heat, still nothing. Right now, it's got Kroil sitting in the hole, soaking. Anybody got any other ideas?

When in doubt press it out. I have done this many times before. If you were close by I would show you how.

I've got a 20 ton press. It's just kind of an odd shape to get a good straight pressure on it. If the Kroil doesn't work, I'll try that though. Thanks.

Well I went ahead and pressed it out. Got it all cleaned up, working smoothly and back together and the brake still drags. Back to square one.

Followup: I took the piston out and everything looked good except for corrosion in the area between the two seals. I used some emery paper to clean that up, put in new seals, and put it all back together. It works fine now. The corrosion had, in essence, shrunk the size of the bore causing the piston to stick.
