    street legal trike in NY

i would love to be able to have a street legal trike, but i do not no about what the laws are in new york, i looked at another thread and according to missori laws, my trike is street legal except for the tires and muffler, i also have reacently obtained rear brake lights, and two front headlights to brong the bike up to code for missori, but i am not firmiliar with new yorks laws, i read about the ny dmv and it says nothing about not being able to ride on the road, you just cant ride on highways, it would just be nice if it were possible to ride my trike to school lol. any info is apreicated

p.s. on the subject of being street legal, i have some things i need to add on my bigred, but dont exactly no how to go about it. i have two small headlights, 2 small brake lights, and a horn. i am aware that i might need a new alternater, but how would i check to se how much amperage all of this would put out, along with how to intergrate this electricla apliences into the system

NY is one of the worst in the US in terms of laws and restriction. while it probably is possible to get it on the road here, it would probably end up costing in the 400$ range. you would have to get your m/c license, get it titled, get it registered and have ti insured. im sure in order to have that titled, it would be titled under special contruction or something and not m/c. that would entale having it inpected for road safety and im pretty sure that is a special inspection by the dmv itself(not sure). so i would say, just buy a junk bike cobble a rear end on it to make it a three wheeler and jut note that it has a three wheel kit on it when you fill out the forms, if it isnt cobbled horribly you should have no problem passing inspection. plus you can get some sweet DOT tires for quad wheels.

I live in Kansas. I only ride on highways when I absolutely have to... like on bridges. Otherwise I ride in the ditches. You can get just about anywhere only riding in ditches. Officers usually don't patrol the dirt roads so I can ride on them just about anytime.

85250r has the right idea! just buy a dual purpose bike and fix a 3whl rearend and fender to it and complet front end(sounds easier than it is!) and your set for the road! the off road 3wheelers are probably not worth the hassle because of the off road only title. suzukis old 350s works well for this

Getting a plate for a trike that has no title is actually possible, because I've done it, and I'm in NY. Just takes a bit of know-how. Street riding, however, is another thing altogether, and since you'd actually be changing the vehicle class to be able to ride on the roads, though, would require going through the same procedure as a homebuilt motorcycle.

i asked a couple cops in my area and they said that as far as riding an off road vehicle on road, i can go short distances as long as i drive slowly and on the sholder. wallkill is a pretty lax town when it comes to stuff like this, if i put turn signals and extra lights ect..... i might be able to ride t on the road legally, though still not on long distances or highways its good enough for me, the nearest trail to my house is only a mile away

I too have been wanting to do this for some time, and have not gave up yet. Thanks to Can-Am with the new Spyder reverse atc like the T rex, this is a huge break through for us 3 wheelers. Send it over seas and get all the mods needed over there and get it regestered over there then bring it back into the country. That would make a wicked vacation. Come home with "gold" lol.
