Unhappy FOUND DEAD! my 300 R!

if finally happend my 83 300R has died last weekend at the ocala ride it started running weird and it was fouling plugs left and right, well I pulled the top end off to find the intake side of the piston MISSING! and no where to be found! the crank is tight and theres nothing in the crank case either!! I'm like WTf?! UPON further inspection I could tell that the piece missing from the piston has been missing for along time! my guess is that along time ago it broke and they pulled the top end and took whatever peices out and left the piston in there broken the whole time! I never knew it was broken as it ran wicked all the time! so I didnt even think about checking it. well any ways a little searching around the last bore piston is still available from honda BUT the rings arnt!! lol!! no good!! so I contacted Vance at http://www.qande.com/ about me sending my top end over to him to get all the mods done to run the newer style piston in the 300 this has diffently put a hamper on all my riding for a while, I will post some picks later of the carnage!

well there are no marks ANY WHERE ELSE! the crank looks perfect not a scratch of nick or dimple any where even the head looks nice and smooth! if you could see the piston in person you can tell that peice has been missing for a long time, as it has no rough edges to the broken side its all been wore smoother!

it ran because its reed motor...the intake side of the piston doesnt do too awful much in a reed motor, im not saying it does nothing, but as far as performance it isn't as vital as on a piston port motor...

That doesn't soud likely that would have made sutch a noise that the neighbors would have called 911!! I have had this happen to two differant snowmobiles. The first one was a 500 and it made sutch a growel that I thought had put a hole in the side of the case. The Second was my 780 Mach Z, It made a LOUD CRACK!!!! and stopped. In both cases the skirt broke off just like this one.
I would have to say (I don't know the history of this machine, OK) someone in the past had this happen and instead of fixxing it they pulled most of the pieses out and sold it ASAP.

The marks on the top of the piston probably happened at the time of the skirt popping off.

look at the bottom of the other skirt .. it was in there bouncing around

another way to tell is that all the marks are on the edge of the piston on the exhaust side following the flow of exhaust.. rare yes,,lucky yes, possible yes

when OEM cast pistons let go the brake into tiny pebble size pieces very easy

I have a polaris in the drive way that did the same exact thing still turned over, nothing locked up , but when I took it apart there was tiny pieces like gravel sitting in the exhaust pipe,,as long as a big piece don't wedge between the cases it will chew it up and spit it out,

this one was a little worse than yours ,,,it still started and ran! NOT a single mark on the dome ,,both skirts broke off,,and nothing bigger than whats in my hand left in the pipe,,and yes it knocked but it ran,,and the bore was unharmed, and the sparkplug get impregnated with little chunks and up in side the plug too..
When forged pistons go the do not break up like this they stay in big chunks mostly and tend to get wedged in between the case and crank
