    Honda Nighthawk 650, starter problems.

My neighbor picked up an 82 Honda 650, 4 cylinder 4 carb, air cooled.. nice find for 300 $ !!

It was run last year aparently bump-started as the Electric start would not work.

It's got a good battery, we removed and cleaned the starter wich looks good ( was full of brush dust. but still plenty of brush left )

You hit the starter and it just spins the electric motor but does not engage the crank.. try and try and try.. once in a while it will grab and turn over a few times then the battery dies ( needs to be left on charger overnight.. but we jumped it to a good battery and have the same problem.. )

Does anyone know how the starter engages the crank ? we dont' have the manual yet, if anyone knows of a scanned version i'd be greatful for a link.

I assume a one way bearing/clutch but looks like it's a total " Open the engine case " type fix.. gulp...

    anyone ?

The parts diagram from Honda shows an externally mounted starter clutch that fits on the end of a gear reduction unit. Should look like a big donut that fits on the inside of a large gear.
