    Chain slack?

    Hey all,

    I have a 1984 YTM200L chain drive and am wondering how much slack I should have on my chain. I'm measuring about 1 to 1 1/2 inches right now.

    Too much? Too little? Any benifits to having it a little tighter? I would just hate to see it fall off some day and get caught behind the front sprocket and crack my case...

    Is that rig a hardtail? if so 1" is good. If you have rear suspension on that you'll want to run a little more. 1 1/2" or so. Also watch the chain as you spin the rear wheels, (on stand) and check for loose or tight spots. That will give you a good idea of the condition of the chain and sprockets. good luck!

    Yeah its a hard tail. Another thing is, I just bought a new chain. I noticed two main types; ones with o-rings and ones without. I bought the chain without o-rings.

    Bad idea? Whats the difference? Just lube?

    the standard chain is lighter and generally not quite as strong. The light factor is important with smaller engines. The o ring chain is lube injected then sealed buy the o rings, much better, but puts more drag on engine. O ring last much longer, and costs more. Good luck, DRaCuLa

    So do you think I made a mistake in purchasing just a regular old chain? Just wondering if I should buy a good one or not...

    I usually don't bother with the sealed O-ring chains. Just keep it lubed and your good to go. Theres no need to run out and get the sealed one when have a chain that with a little more maintaining, aka frequent lubes, will last a long time. If you have the money next time and you ride in sand, silt, or mud bog go for the o-ring chain. i personally mud a lot and still use a non o-ring chain.
