    Gun Owners....

How many gun owning members own/enjoy military style rifles or carbines, and what's your favorites?

For me, my fav has to be FAL syle rifles for their accuracy, power, and reliability...though they are a bit heavy.

A close second would have to(shockingly) be AK pattern rifles for their ruggedness, reliabilty, and ease of handling.

Honorable mention goes to the old warhorse M1 Garand(30/06 8-shot stripper clip fed) and the M1-A(.308 box fed).

I own a few. Have owned many others.

One that I have now is a PTR-91 (HK clone) .308 16" barrel. I am really enjoying it more than the FAL's I have owned.

A few weeks ago I got to shoot a real M-14, select fire. It was sweet!

I've just sold a 16" HK clone myself. It was an older Century with a Federal Arms aluminum reciever. It was actually much nicer and worked much better than most Century guns you come across.

    A 16" 7.62x51 is LOUD....but I'm sure I don't have to tell you that

I have a WW2 Arisaka type99 rifle, 7.7mm jap. Great hunting rifle. Very accurate. 5 shot stripper clip. Not a fast rate of fire but based on the very tried and true mauser action. This rifle is very powerful and I can see why it was very hated by the US Marines. The shot sound itself is very distinctive.

I just bought a yugoslavian sks a little while ago, its got the gernade launcher on it also, overall its preety fun to shoot and shells are so cheap for it, not real fast or super accurate, but its not bad either

Yugo 8mm mauser, weighs a ton but ammo is dirt cheap and it's a blast to shoot. Of course the SKS, I have several from back in the 90's when I had my gun shop and could buy them 5 at a time for 45.00. I have 1 set up for deer hunting, ballistically it's equal to the 30-30. Then my personal favorite, M1 .30 carbine paratrooper model. Lite, fast and plenty potent round.

SKS is a great gun for the money. I've had at least one in the house since the early 90's when you could pick them up for $80 or so all day long.

Here lately I've started paying attention to the WWI & WWII era bolt action military rifles. I never restore those either. I like looking at the dings and scratches imagining the history that may behind each one.

I've kept and hunted with reproduction 19th Century military rifles and carbines too. Talk about a really slow rate of fire!! I've had repro 1858 2-band Enfields in .577, a repro 1859 Sharps Cavalry carbine in .54 cal., and was having a repro swivel-ramrod Enfield saddle carbine made by the only guy that does them, but he quit before he started mine due to health reasons.

BTW, reenacting mounted Confederate Cavalry for years is how the 19th Century stuff became a passion.

What are your thoughts on the new 'Assault Sporting Rifles' now sold at Gander Mountain. Some like them, but I think they feel cheap. Everything was loose on them like they were put together in 5 minutes. I think they leave much to be desired. I like these puppys here, do they count? Its an FN P90.

Hmmm..... might have to think.... WWII .30 carbine and M1 Garand, 93 Mauser 7mm, 98 Mauser 7mm, 98 Mauser 8mm, Egyptian Hakim Semi in 8mm Mauser, Arisaka 6.5 Jap, Arisaka 7.7 Jap sporterized and rechambered for 30.06, Chinese SKS, Polytech M14 clone.

If I needed one for its original intended purpose, the M14 would be my first choice. Other than for collector nastalgia, and a very fun toy, the most useless would have to be the .30 carbine. These were designed for officers who could not shoot a pistol, and its debateable as to whether the round equals the .22 rimfire in overall performance, but its a blast to shoot. I took it rabbit hunting once, but never hit one. It might make a good squirrel gun. The Hakim is the weirdest semi auto action I have ever seen, very interesting. They are all fun to shoot, and I dont have anything bad to say about any of them.

I don't have any military style rifles, but I've shoot a few.
I got to burn up about 500 rounds on a tri podded .50 cal machine gun.
Tried to melt the barrel, but couldn't. Thanks Uncle Sam it was a blast let me tell you.
Used to shoot a mounted M240 machine gun (308) on my tank.
Would an 120mm tank round count from an M1A1?
M-16 and M-4, but didn't like them to much. Alway zeroing it so the darn thing
will shoot right. Think that's why the AK is the worlds favorit. It will alway shoot and go where you want it.

So you can still get 8mm ammo? My mother inlaw has an 8mm mauser sniper rifle
her dad got from the war. I don't know how he got it but he did. Still has the scope and blood stains on it. I'm really wanting to shoot this thing guess I'll have to find the ammo some place. I'd like to have it ,but I have a bother inlaw says it would be a cold day in hell. So it's pretty much his when she passes. Which I can understand.

It does in my book! With the bayonet fixed, that's one long gun/club to boot.
