yfm 225 help

as some of you guys know my brother got a 1988 moto 4 225. it has issues and some of them i worked out. here are the issues i am still having with it.

1. it hardly ever starts (takes about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to get it fired up.

2. it is popping, and throwing flames out the carb while starting up.

3. it lacks power when you put the throttle down (unless you give it gas a little at a time).

i know it is carb issues but i dont know any adjustments of setting for the carb. i looked for hours online and all i came up with was the fallowing. but i also herd it was a valve issue. i dont even know what they are supposed to be set at.

it has a mikuni vm24mm carb. the main jet is 112.5 and it has a #20 pilot jet. other than that i know nothing about the carb. let alone the engine.

guys please help me out im am so fed up of this pos thing.

Have you checked the timing rob? ignition timing and cam.

i would but like i said i dont know anything about this thing. where is the pulse generator on this stupid thing ? when it comes to yamaha i am stupid as all hell.
