Yamaha 225DX Electric Start Problems, any advice greatly appreciated

Hey all i have recently become the owner of a Yamaha 225DX 3 wheeler . I have been doing some restoration on it ,my biggest challenge has been the electric start. I have a fully charged battery, know the starter is good cause i tested it,i know the wire from the silinoid to the starter is good,as is the ground from the frame to the starter. When i put it in nutrual and press the start button there is a small relay that just makes a clicking sound,i do not know what this relay is for. I have been told to tear apart the start button ,does that sound like a good place to start? The power is somehow not getting to the silinoid from the start button.

Clean the contacts in that button,then plug and unplug the little black relay box.put a jumper wire to the terminal on the solenoid and see if the solenoid will work.I had 2 of the 225 and they both just had contact problems in the starting system

My YTM200 had contact problems also, the relay on the back, by the solenoid.

Hello, how did you test your starter? I had the same problem with my DR. When I put power to the starter ( off the machine ) it would turn over. When I put it back in the machine, it would not turn the engine over. I bought a new starter off ebay, and that solved my starting problem. Good luck

it sound like your problem could be your relay.even though it's clicking.that relay
powers up your starter siliond.at the relay there should be two red with white
trace wires.key on check for batt power.not the one with no batt power probe
it while hitting the starter button.if your relay triger is workin you switch is good.
look at the relay.

Thanks for the advice ..my problem was the push button on the handle bars ,corroded to the point of no return. I have since put a simple key start from a lawn tractor in it's place until i can locate the Start/light switch.

To test the starter to see if it was ok in my case i just turned the key on and bypassed everything and put power directly to the starter ....turned over and started with no prob.
