    Will this filter work?

I have this filter coming for my 86 R with a 38 mm A/S on it.
It's the proper diameter for the intake bell of the carb.
Judging off the angle, I'm thinking this will work, and clear the frame, or darn near clear it.
    The K&N number is RU-177.
If it works, I plan on running this with an Outerware on it.
Does it look like it will work, and is it gonna provide enough protection from dirt/dust under normal, non-muddy conditions?

Your going to need a tube to spread the filter away from the carb. I just bought a couple of them from esr and found out they are different from the atc to the trx. I think the filter has a different angle to it. I had an r with just the filter on the carb and it had to be crushed to fit between the frame rails and the rear shock. All you need is some thin wall aluminum to get your filter out past the shock.

There is also a big difference in the rad valves from atc to trx so if your running one it could cause problems if you have a trx rad valve on a atc.

    Gotcha...thanks Jim.
    I'm running a CR intake on it.....97 or 98.
I'll have to check out the tubing if need be.
Do you clamp the aluminum to the carb directly, or use a little rubber tubing also?

You have to use a small piece of tubing to get a tight seal at the carb. If you go and buy it be prepared to spend some money. Tractor radiator hose in 2 1/2" is expensive, couple bucks an inch. If you need a piece let me know, I've got some radiator hose or I've got what esr sells you. Its thinner but it works. I run the radiator hose, my filter doesn't move at all with that stuff, with the other it will flex a little.

    Thanks again Jim.
Once I get it, I'll see what all I need to do.
If I happen to need a piece of that hose, I can probably get it around here somewhere, being farm country is half the state....LOL
If not, I will definitely let you know. I'll PM ya and let you know how I made out with the filter set-up.

    Thanks......now I see exactly what's going on.
My intake is a bit different, but I should think it'll be pretty much the same set-up.
One thing I need to watch for is clearance at the frame also, so it doesn't rub, I'm thinking.
This is judging on the angle that my carb comes out at.
I'll post a pic or two soon.

Here are a couple pics of my carb/intake setup.
    I'm using a 97 or 98 CR intake, with a 38mm A/S.
The pics make the carb angle look worse than it is.
Basically, if you run a straightedge off the carb throat, it comes into the frame tube about 3/8".
I may have to weld up an anlged tube to come off the carb or something..........I'm not sure.
The stock intake is a bit better, but doesn't have the stuffer to match up to the CR reed cage, so I'm not gonna use it.
