    I'm not sure on the 84, but on the 85 and 86 R it's a Black/White wire, and a Green wire.
When these two are connected, it kills the engine by grounding the ignition.
One way to find out is to remove your engine stop/headlight switch.
Follow the two wires off of the engine switch, and you got 'em.

The switch has only one wire because it grounds when you mount it.
On most of the diagrams I looked at, it is either a Black, or a Black/White wire off of the CDI that must be grounded to kill the engine.
On your diagram, it is the black one. Since it looks as though someone hacked the wiring up some, you might have to trace the Black wire off the CDI.
The Black wire you had hooked up might have been the right one, but the switch might not have had a clean ground, and that's why you got wacked.
You might have to take one of the handlebar clamps off, and clean up the handlebars right there so it gets a better connection to ground.
Also, if your bars are painted, sometimes you have to scrape a little spot of paint off so the switch grounds good.

Good catch John. I didn't catch that.
I'm used to the ones that ground to kill.
You would need a switch that is normally closed (connected), and I will bet the one that you have is normally open (disconnected).
You would then hook the Black off the CDI, and the Green that goes to the headlight, taillight, and CDI from the mag (stator) to the switch.
When you go to kill the engine, the switch would be disconnected, and run would be connected together.

so i tried scrapping the handlebar down to bare metal, and then connected it to the black wire, and it worked...any way to keep the bare metal from rusting? thanks.
