deals on wheel-street legal atc200 in oregon

I've been seeing this guy driving around town the past few weeks with a trike in the back of his pickup. Well I pulled up to the local market, and there it was. I went over and parked by him and waited for him to come out. When he came out we got to talking, and he is looking to sell this thing. It is an atc200 not sure what year though, and he wanted me to make him an offer. I was gonna say 150 bucks, but I didn't want to insult him, so I asked, "how does $200 sound?" He went for it! well it runs good, has only one small crack in all the plastic, but needs an intake boot and a rear tire. then we got to talking, and it has a clean and clear title. But get this! It is registered and plated! the only thing is the tags haven't been renewed since 1982 or so. I went to the honda shop, and they said that in 2006, off road vehicles were no longer able to put dual sport kits on it and become street legal. It had to be plated from the factory, or been plated since the new, but had to of been before 2006. Well if this has a clean and clear title, plates, tags, and is registered, it's legal in oregon right? Wrong. I checked out the DMV website, and it stated that it had to be 51 inches wide or wider, and have DOT tires. So I'm thinking, slap some minicooper tires on there, get a huge durablue axle, and renew the tags. I also need a horn, signals, and mirrors. Where can I get this stuff?

Also, this is only a 200, with no susupension, so is there any way to make this as much as a 200x as possible, and still keep it registered, titled, and plated? I'm getting really excited about this. I want to know if this is possible. I would probably swap out engine for a semi-built desert 200x engine so it is a direct bolt in, and will handle pulling hills at 55mph and not blow up. Oh, FYI, I've got a drivers licence, as well as a motorcycle endorsement.

    What do you guys think?

Also, please refrain from stating how unstable trikes would be on the road with cars, and if your just gonna be negative and biased, please don't. Only comments or opinions on if it will work or not, personal stories, or places to get parts. Try to keep an open mind while reading and responding to this thread. thanks for your time.

i think you got one of the only opportunities to succeed at trying. Sounds like you did your homework. But to be honest, I wouldn't doubt that theres some kind of snag in the laws to might stop you. Worth the try though.

I wish you the best of luck and keep us informed. If you do get that on the road, a full cherry restoration would be in order to represent on the streets.

So have you seen 4 wheelers cruising down the road under this rule in OR?

oh I know. Once I know that thing will be legal for the road, I'm gonna do as close to a full restoration as possible. If I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna do this right. As far as quads in oregon, I haven't seen any yet. But there are a ton of motorcycles. There's even some WW1 buggies crusing around with no lights or signals or anything. I hope there's not gonna be a little DMV snag-up, but you never know. I know I'm getting 66mpg out of my nx250 enduro, instead of 17 when I drive my '95 cherokee. This would just be for fun, and to see if I can do it. I wouldn't take it out on the free-way for sure, but highways and around town are a definate. Any one know where I can get the kits for lights, signals, horns, mirrors, MONSTER wide axle ,and what kind of atv/atc rims I can mount mini-cooper tires on.

Help me out with this guys, and this is a HUGE POSSIBILITY!.

nice, street legal, you can get turn signals, horns, and mirrors from a motorcycle shop or pepboys, auto zone, etc. and for suspension you can get a front suspension off of a 1983 atc 200, mine had it, a rear would probably be too expensive and about making it wider you can get longer bolts and double the wheels on each side so in the rear you have 2 wheels on the right and 2 on the left, but a extended axle would be better, that would be cool to keep it street legal, hope you do

in the pic is my 1983 200 with stock front suspension

If you can't find an axle wide enough, you can also get wheel spacers to add another 4".

High speed street legal golf cart tires and rims. I thought I would try to lend a hand, they are much cheaper the the cooper rims and tires unless you have a set laying around.

I had one of those 1983 atc200 a couple years ago. I liked the front suspension. But I like the 200x front suspension alot more. Which one is easier to put onto a 1981/1982 atc200? If it is easier to put on the atc200 suspension, how much harder is it to put on the 200x suspension? I really want the x's suspension.

Any ideas on a rear shock. It's not manditory, but it would help alot. Any more ideas.
