Do YTM125's actually suck this much?

I just pulled out the 125 yesterday. Cleaned it up, put a new coil wire on, fired it up, and it is soooooo slow. hahah, i figured it would be comparable to my ytm 200 (which is slow) but nope.

It smokes quite a bit, so maybe it needs to be freshened up. Just wondering what you guys think of your 125 yamis in comparison to other trikes.

My YT125 has minimal off the line grunt. To get full use of the power band and to get the full pulling power of the machine, you have to hit it full throttle in second gear. First is for pulling up a grade or starting out, second is where you're gonna want to be for most all trail riding up to about 20 mph, and third is good only when you've maxed out second, for flat terrain cruising.

The 125 is a fun machine, but if you expect to wheelie like crazy or pull hard from a start, well, that's not gonna happen. Oh, and mine has a brand new top end, and it smokes too. I use Pro Honda 2 stroke premix oil. The smoke I don't mind, at least I know my mix is good.

A stock yt125 only has a 6.0:1 compression ratio. On mine, I've installed a nos bassini exhaust. I've also picked up a webco head for a dt125 which should bump up the compression. You can get a different rear sprocket which should help. The earlier yt125's had a smaller carb than the later yt125's. I've picked up a nos 84-85 carb which helps. I hope to be adding a new piston and rebore so I should be good to go. Make sure your chain is correctly adjusted and your wheel bearings are in good shape. The yt125's have alot of potential, you just have to coax it out of them.

they LOVE to wheelie the way the motors mounted over the axle makes the front end soo light......on my yt i got an MX 125 head which is dual plug and the corresponding MX piston it bumps the compression up a little and should give it more pep

Mine's been overbored, although I don't know the size of the bore, and is an '85.

It is what it is. It's never going to be a performance trike, but it's light and maneuverable, and a decent ride for the beginner to intermediate. I can fling mine around pretty well, but just like racing an MG, you have to know where your power band is, and use it.

think of this tho they raced them in the early 80's theyre comparable to a 185/200 honda

I consider it to be a hard working wheelie machine that is fun to ride. If I ever get a clue on how to clean and adjust the carb on mine.

I remember mine. The damn thing would go into a death wobble when you got up to speed. The ends of the goofy shiter setup broke a few times. The bearing carrier cracked the ears off of it. It was hell going over bumps with no suspension. Man, I had FUN on it though. It got me into triking and on to bigger and better rides.

I am going to give it a chance I guess. By putting my finger over the spark plug hole. compression does feel quite low. but I havent used my tester yet.

The recoil spring is just about toast, and the throttle cable just snapped today, hahahha ,this thing is a piece.

It does start up pretty nice for being in the shape it is though.
