Theres only one way to find out....RACE 'EM
[20:55] <waterpumper> putting a racing pipe on a Foreman is like putting a high dollar bikini on a 400 pound chick...just because it fits doesn't mean it looks cool
Another this vs that - well I don't know - It always depends on the riders really, but the tale of the tape says stock vs stock - 400EX: 28hp, 375lbs, 4 valve A/C thumper, 4 wheels - '82 ATC250R: 18hp, 300lbs, A/C pinger. As much as I love the Air-cooled R's, I'd have to give it to the EX, in a drag or especially on the track.

An 82 atc 250R has 18 hp....That cant be right. As the R is much more lighter it would have a good jump on the EX. Maybe it would give a run for its money in a short drag race.

Let me preface this with, while I suck at math, I love statistics, so I collect bits and pieces of information regarding ATV's. Now for the Hondas, I've told this story a few times on here allready but here it goes again. My old co-worker Bubba Bryner used to race gocarts competitively back in the day and was actually New Jersey State champion a couple of times before he turned his attention to ATV's. I believe he was sponsored in some way by Yamaha and campaigned a Tri-Z for a year then switched to Hondas. He has a friend Brian he used to race with who was sponsored by Honda back in the day and now has a small shop here in Pa and runs his own river guide/fishing company off the Delaware. Anyway, on the way home from a job we stopped by Brians shop for a while just to shoot the trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro and I was looking around at some of his old magazines and memorabilia when I picked up a copy of an old ATV tuning book with Marty Hart on the cover. It was like finding the holy grail of ATV spec's. The best thing about it was that it gave horsepower ratings on all of the Honda ATV's. I immediately offered to buy it from him - and he promptly refused. He did however let me photocopy a few pages out of it on his crapy fax machine, mainly of spec. charts. Now for the bad news, I never got the full name of the book and all my copies are missing the title of the book from the top. also, all the copies are on that crappy old style fax paper and have faded to the point where they are almost non-readable. I only copied a few pages - I missed a whole lot of info that included head to head comparisons of ATC250R's against Tecates and the Tri-Z that included their horsepower ratings as well as I recall. I did however write the info down so I still have most of it. Worst of all, after countless searches on the internet and eBay, I have yet to find this book. All I know is that it had the words "Marty Hart" and probably "inside secrets" in the title and it must be from 1985/6 because all the spec info ends on 1985.

heres a pic....little help w/ identifying the 250r as to what year
Hey Wickedfinger, still have the horsepower specs on an '85 Tri-Z? I'm curious to see that.
Trikes:
1973 Honda ATC70-orange!
(2)1985 ATC70
1985 Big Red 250
1985 250R
I raced my 01 400ex aginst my old 85 tri-z and by the time the 400 hits
2nd gear it pulls away hard.tried this race riding the Z then the 400 same
results both times .but the R is faster than the Z so it would be a better
race for sure.
how do you guys think an 84 r 60 over, and other mods would do vs. a 400ex?
I'm currently riding:
1984 honda110
1982 honda185s
1986 honda bigRed
1984 honda 250R-- .80 over, cobra expansion chamber, shaved head, decked cylinder, larger carb., carbon-fiber reeds, 18" carsliles, RK race chain, uni-filter.
1986 yamaha IT200
1985 yamaha XT250
1978 Italie Snark Moped
and some vintage dirtbike.
