    is the clutch out??? UPDATE PROBLEM SOLVED

    my 94 yz250s clutch is acting up. in first when you rev it up with the clutch pulled in the bike starts going forward.it also wont idle in gear.
    are the clutch plates wore out?
    how hard would these be to change?

    try adjusting the clutch cable, maybe its just from the cable stretching. MUCH cheaper then the other option. i was told YZ's stretch them down by the motor.

    Could be a mixture of things, springs could be worn. May as well do clutch plates & springs aswell.

    Regarding how difficuilt they are to change, only basic mechanical knowledge is required. A manual might come in handy aswell.

    Yes its very easy to swap the plates. Take the clutch cover off, remove the 6 bolts holding the springs down. pull the outer off and you should be able to swap the plates from there. Just put the new ones in in the same order as the old ones. Put the outer back on, and then replace the old springs with the new ones as you screw the six bolts back in. Simple as that. Now if your clutch basket is damaged and need replacing it will be a little harder than this but you never know til you dig in. But like the other said try adjusting the cable first. (Forgot to menton you'll need a gasket as well for the clutch cover.)

    I'v never tried those but i can tell you that most of the cheap brands brake fast and you end up spending the same amount or more to replace them than if you would have just bought a high quality brand. I like Moose myself, But you'll pay a little more for them. At Dennis kurk (king of high prices) you can get Moose friction disks, plates and the springs for a total of $169 and i think you'll get free shipping being that its over $100. I use DK cause its fast and they list everything they have for your year and model of bike. Makes it easy.

    I personally think you just need to adjust the clutch cable just like icp4life said, what happens is the cable sleeve/housing compresses giving more slack on the cable itself, that explains why it's wanting to go even with the clutch lever pulled in and also why it's wanting to idle down, the same thing happens to my R once in a while so I do a clutch adjustment and bamm all better. If it where your clutch you would be noticing slipping when you it while riding with your hand off of the clutch lever, the symptoms you explained to me sound the exact opposite.

    99 out of 100 times it's the cable adjustment, but sometimes the plates (drive/driven) can actually bond together with a combination of old oil, and time.

    This is not something that happens over night... if it comes down to it pull the plates completely out of the bike, and see if they are "stuck" together. I've had at least 5 bikes suffer from this problem all of which have sat for at least a year.

    If that's the case then it's best to replace all the plates with new ones... new springs are a good idea too. Hope this helps,

    If the cable adjustment isnt working i would just take the clutch apart for inspection. Fresh plates and disks wouldnt hurt anyway if its a used bike.

    i read in a magazine,dirt wheels i think that you can pull the plates out a throw them in the dirt and scratch them up real bad and file the groves out of the basket for a temporary fix????
    the ppl at e2s were a joke. almost no help at all. that is a 4 wheeler site primarily. god forbid that there is anything faster than a banshee. they hate 4 strokes too. i like this site much better there are alot more people that are willing to help.

    it sounds like the basket has grooves worne in the tabs- this keeps the plates from seperating so it will turn freely-
    yea you can file them smooth again- i have done this to most of my bikes,and have had no problems-
    you should get a new kit of fiber plates to be safe,springs as well- dennis kirk for a vesrah kit - there a inexpencive kit ,and last--1-800-328-9280
    you can sand lightly the metal plates - or wire wheel them lightly-
    this gets the burnt oil/glaze off them-
    its easy to change most clutches- i dont know how many hondas need the special nut tool though-
    i dont think any bikes need it-, but i dont know every bike made
