    1982 Honda 185s carb problem.

I have recently rebuilt my carb on my 185s. In clymers manual it says to turn the air fuel mixture screw in till it stops then back it off 2 turns.
But it dosent say where to start with the idle. Also I did get it started but ran like crap, lots of black smoke, pulled the spark plug and it was covered with black carbon.

So my question's where do I begin to figure this thing out?
How many turns for the idle screw?
How do I fine tune the carb? What direction do I turn the air fuel mixture screw?
    Thanks

this link may help you find out a little more about fine tuning. http://www.3wheelerworldforums.com/s...ad.php?t=55086

as far as idle screw goes there isnt a set setting for it. same with air/fuel screw. the specs are to get you in the general area of a running engine. i went threw the same thing on my 200s engine.
down to parts because i no longer have a place to ride trikes.

    GIT IT RAAAGGGGG !!!!

Idle setting wouldn't have any effect on how it runs.

I'm not sure how many turns in or out the idle screw is. What happens is the more you turn the idle screw in, the more it pushes the slide up, so in a sence it is the same as pushing on the throttle. Turning the screw in will only let the slide close so far. If you need just a rough guess as where to put the idle screw, back it out all the way and then keep turning it in until you can feel it pushing on your slide and then give it another turn or so. That will get you within range of a couple turns of where its supposed to be.
    Hope that helps.

As far as puffing black smoke, sounds like it is running rich. Did it run before you rebuilt the carb? Did you put the clip on the needle where it was before? Didn't leave any papertowels in the intake boot or air filter by acciddent?
Turning the mixture screw in will make it richer, turning it out will make it leaner. I would run it where clymer recommends or inthe ballpark of between 2-3 turns out.
