85 R is top dog at Silver Lake dunes

Went to Silver Lake dunes over the weekend with five buddies. Some who have never been there before, and they were shocked at what they saw. Drag racing is really kind of a big deal up there and some people do nothing but that, when there, with dedicated race machines. Lots of fast bikes and quads and usually some trikes, (8 i believe i saw) Well around midday we see two 85r's that looked very serious. Only one of them took to the strip and after a few passes it was clear he was the new king of the strip. It was great listening to some of the younger people saying, dude it's a fricken 3wheeler. Or, look at that thing out there. Some people however still respect the trike and know their potential. After a bit, a Banshee rolls up with a highly modified narrow chassis and a big cheetah alcohol engine. Billet everything, and dual out of frame exhaust. A beautiful machine for sure. Well the R was on the sidelines and the Banshee was now on the terror. Well, after a bit, out comes the R and everyone else who thinks their fast. Probably a 15-18 person drop. The banshee squeeked the R. Second race the R cut that in half. 3rd race the R won. From that point on it was 50/50 on the wins but i had to give the R the honors since he was still utilizing a oem cylinder, and it was a 22 year old trike for gods sake! Turns out it was a father and son pair that were very nice to talk to. Probably late 20's and middle 50's. He said it was a little over 300cc's with lots of work done. The dad made the out of frame pipe, swingarm, and even the narrow aluminum rear axle. This guy was extremely smart, and has owned them for 10 years. So he politely said he knows what works and what doesn't. It was highly modified from front to back, and ran on alcohol, but still had all oem plastics and seat. The son was the primary driver, but dad would jump in from time to time on his 85. Not nearly as fast, and trick, but still potent. I told them about 3ww and TF, and they never heard of us. In fact i talked to 3 other trikers out there and neither did they. They were all very happy to know there was a website devoted to 3wheelers, and all said they are going to check it out. My tecate ran well all day and would consisently place in top 6-7 out of 15 or more in any given race, so i beat many 450's. So i can't complain. Hell, i have never raced that much in my life. For a couple hours that's all we did. But things were running well, and i was holding my own. Got many thumbs up, and looks. It's great to know the mighty R still owns the dunes over 20 years after their retirement. Long live the trike.

Oh yeah, respect was shown by nobody wanting to line up against these two after a few good beat downs. T-3 lopes has some short videos of them making a few passes after everyone else cleared out. I'll let him know to try and get them up in a few days. Hopefully we can figure it out. But he does have a few pics i think.
