striping frame paint...to do or not to do?

i need my frame repainted, swingarm also. how much of a pain is it to strip it by hand? ive used some paint stripper before on a engine case, that was aluminum but i have never stripped steel thats been painted.

what tools do i need to strip a frame? if anyone has just paided somone to do it what did it cost?

just wanted to get an idea of what i am up for

You'll be in waaay over your head! Clean all the grease and grime off it.. Scuff it up a little bit then repaint it.

You cannot imagine what a PITA it is to strip a frame by hand. I learned my lesson the hardway! OR pay someone to blast it for you. Then if money allows have it powdercoated. You wont be dissapointed.

The powder coater I used media blasted it included in the cost. It wasn't any different than if I just him do the coating. He just asked if I would remove any grease so it wouldn't ruin his media.

Yes. I have done it by hand and never will again! Took me about 4 days to do with on and off work. I coated it in paint stripper and took a wire wheel to it. For the tight spots I used a dremel with a mini wire wheel. The main parts were not hard to do but the tight spots between motor mounts were! The swingarm by hand is nothing. I also painted a 110 frame and it was very easy since its all flat. I didnt even bother about the inside though.

I use aluminum oxide blasting media then powdercoat. I can get a frame done powdercoated in the buffalo area around $100 bones.

It ain't that bad. I use aircraft remover (now available at walmart - or any Automotive store that sells paint). Brush it on - wire brush some of it then hit it with the water hose. Repeat until all paint is gone. A couple hours to do this is well worth it for a full restore.

yea small blasters are great- for all kinds of stuff- just use the right sand-
    sillica-,glassbead-
steel/alluminum ect....-- its a great thing to be able to do if you have the area to do it-
    MUST- USE A AIR FILTER
even if its a paper kind

Also - to sand blast a frame using just sand as the media takes freaking forever. I have tried this method as well. You would be looking at 5 or 6 hours probably with home tools. An industrial shot-blaster would be a different story though.
